Fake or original?

I hav certainly seen many Fender necks and headstocks age that way (and even have a couple).

Yes, I've seen a few that look like that too
including one that looks a bit like someone has tried to achieve that effect.... and gone totally OTT
It's genuine though - the guy who owns it has had it since new

You'll have to look closely at other clues to find out whether it's genuine or not
But heck, is it a great bass? That's the most important thing

What's strange about it? Looks like a late 76 Jazz Bass to me.

Is it a hippy re-fin, or was it originally natural wood?

If a re-fin then whoever did it must have been delighted when he saw the grain that he was revealing.

Don't know about the finish but serial number looks strange. Now I see that Fender combined S6 and 76 these years.
