BigRedX
Agreed. The Beatles have to be taken in context. Back in the day they were the pilot fish for the rest of the music world. People held there breath when a new recording was imminent. Exciting days, I genuinely feel sorry for anyone who did not live through the 60s. Anything and everything was possible. Japhet
I'm not a huge Beatles fan but the thing that completely blows me away about them is the way their music evolved over such a short space of time. To go from 'She love you, yeah, yeah, yeah' to Across The Universe in a handful of years is quite extraordinary. I can't think of any other band whose evolution has been anywhere near as spectacular. I've played a couple of songs in our set, the song writing is great, but you are right about Pete. Are you Blue in disguise?
No no no, simply stating facts.
I would like to think that any group of half-way decent musicians and songwriters, give access to the artistic influences, technological support and development and lack of financial obligation to stick to a winning musical formula, that The Beatles enjoyed would be equally capable of showing the same kind of development. Just look at what The Pretty Things achieved from their debut album in 1964 to "Parachute" in 1970 with a fraction of the resources that the Beatles had. On the other hand there are those who would argue that "She Loves You" is a far superior song to "Across The Universe". timmo
Jamerson & Pino. Not bad, but heavily overrated around here.
Jamerson was another musician at the right place at the right time. He shaped a lot of Motown songs with his bass lines. Maybe not the best ever, but he must be one of the most influential. Some of the bass lines sound like they should never go with the song if you listen to them in isolation, but they fit like a glove when put into the mix. Saw him live a few months ago and he totally blew me away - great band / material / attitude, and that voice! At 77 years old, one of the very few singers left of his generation who are actually as good if not better than when they first found fame. Never heard Tom come even close to missing a note, an amazing singer. His last few albums are definitely worth a listen too, quite dark and bluesy. Completely get it if you don't like his voice, but honestly don't think he is overrated.

dmccombe7
Quite a few surprises in this thread. Don't get the Kiss one tho. ? They've a huge fan base and they do put on a massive theatrical show. Maybe not the greatest musicians in the world and they have gone a bit pop but in their heyday they were pretty much top of their game. Afraid i am a Kiss fan at heart mainly their older stuff but I've never actually seen them live. Just goes to show how everyone's taste in music is so different. On the Jaco thing i can appreciate his talent but even as a bassist i couldn't listen to a full album of the stuff. Maybe in late 70's early 80's i might have just to perfect my own bass skills but not now. The Beatles one did confuse me a little too considering how many famous hit records they've had. Think if you lived in the heyday of some of the bands mentioned in the thread you may have had a different perspective off them but many of the younger bassists just don't get the older bands much the same as many of the older bassists (me included) don't get some of the modern bands. Life is a funny old thing Still it's made for an interesting thread. Dave
grumpyguts
Cream. Most of what I have heard sounds like big ego's playing over each other. I have tried to listen to that Albert Hall concert from 1968 - never managed to get to the end. I guess it's one of those "You had to be there" moments to get it. PawelG
Very interesting thread. I don't get how AC/DC can be overrated. They came up with something fresh (sound wise), established that, wrote countless awesome hard rock songs and never changed. Not to mention that they sound much better live than they do on the albums. And what a great name for a rock n roll band :-) Ok, they had some help along the way but still, I think they deserve the fame they get. T-Bay
That's personal choice for you. A couple of my favourite bands of all time have been mentioned, ones I can't conceive of as ever being considered over rated, but then at least one response thought that about my suggestion of the Beatles. It's a good thing we don't all like the same stuff.

There's only one I dislike - Kings of Leon - don't know why, I've heard few notes from them on the radio and couldn't stand it since. I don't know the songs, and there were few moments when I asked somebody to change the station on the radio, and I didn't even know it was them until somebody told me. Alot of bands/artists mentioned here are "overrated" by personal taste. I also think an awful lot of them worked really hard to get where they are, and thats what I respect even if I don't like their music. Kings of Leon obviously didn't work hard, that's for sure ;-)
