To me Jaco's best stuff was his work with Joni Mitchell.

This being a case in point.

Although I'm also very fond of this, with it's more conventional groove.

Yeah , l loved the Joni Mitchell stuff also

I'd like to hear someone record some of Jacos work but with a different tone , like on a warm P bass etc , not in anyway a critical comment about his work , just think it would interesting as everyone I have heard with the talent to reproduce his stuff also does a great job with the exact tone. I hope no one takes this the wrong way , I enjoy hearing different takes on wonderful work.

He also had good arranging chops and his Piano playing was pretty decent as well.
The jamming album with Pat Metheny, Paul Bley and Bruce Ditmus is an interesting listen.

When he burst onto the scene, it really was a case of wow! Only a handful of other Bassists have done that for me.

My first experience of Jaco was on the Al Di Meola LP 'Land Of The Midnight Sun' - the track was 'Suite - Golden Dawn', a three part suite. It was a new sound for me and a real ear-opener. Been a fan ever since. I even remember where I was the day that I heard he had died.

Michael League has a good go here! Takes a little while to get into it though...

Interesting feature yesterday in No Treble including a rare live performance of Shadows & Light with Joni Mitchell, featuring a much more laid back Jaco.

You can buy shadows and light live on DVD/Bluray :-)

+ 1 million! His work with Joni was sublime and this is a great example.

Sounds like someone that has just been given a fretless playing over a you tube track to my ears, I keep listening to links hoping I'll find one I enjoy but it hasn't happened yet :(

My oldest is having a Jaco day. He just commented, that apart from his fabulous musicianship, Jaco was continually surrounded by high end players.(they must have enjoyed playing with him). How do you get to play in a great band ? Start one yourself and fill it with great players. Jaco certainly had an ear for wonderful players when putting together his band. :D

The soloing on this track from Bob Mintzer and Randy Brecker is just top draw, and I love the Steelpan solo from Othello Molineaux (terrific).
