Geek99
i have an "OK" cheap one off ebay - but based on that experience.... spend money to get a solid, not laminated top. light strings work better - you can just turn up louder make sure you like the action as adjustment is slow and painful to do check the string volume balance on the pickup - mine is quiet on the lower strings. If its anything like mine, it will go out of tune a lot.

But thanks for the advice.
Mike Brooks
Washburn AB series are a good start, I have a second hand AB40 that just hits the nail on the head everytime. AB models come up from time to time so just keep your eyes peeled. Mike
Biffburn
I've got a Takamine EG512C with La Bella flatwounds on it. Sounds beautiful unplugged, and sounds decent plugged in. Good all-rounder for the price imo!!!
elom
I don't know what your budget is but if you are looking to not part with much cash I'd recommend the Harley Benton HBB30. At £115 it's great value and sounds just fine. I wanted a cheap acoustic to leave in the living room so I can just pick it up for a couple of minutes here and there and not worry if it gets jumped on by the kids. TheRev
I'd recommend the Takamine EG512 as well - best bass out there in its price range. Or, if money isn't an issue - one of these Edit - just noticed there's an EG512 in the 'for sale' forum. Nice price too. Huge amounts of interest and compliments from other bassists and punters alike. This model has the slatted soundhole, spruce top and mahogany back/sides with a piezo saddle pickup and onboard controls. I am not so sure this particular model "20" is still made. I haven't tried the expensive Takamine, looks pretty cool though.

What i mean is did it arrive in a playable state straight away? I've never liked buying stuff off the net but to get it at that price is really good. Jean-Luc Pickguard
I have my eye on the Harley Benton fretless acoustic five string from Thomann for around £200 with case. I've been dropping hints to the missus but apparently I already have too many basses.
Alun
The new Corts seem nice, espcially the one with the cutaway. Cheers Alun

I was impressed, especially for that sort of money.

markytbass
I like the HB fretless but has anyone tried one of these http://www.rino88.net/index.php?act=viewPr...mp;productId=40 thinking of getting one. Currrls
i bought a crafter ba400eq (i think thats the name) from ebay about 6 months ago. got it for £40 when the rrp was about £240 and its in perfect condition. i love it, use it more than my electric bass for just sitting in my room and making up tunes or playing along to stuff. it really does deserve some new strings cos the ones on it look VERY old
Kiwi
definitely try before you buy on acoustics. Depending on how they're made, the response across the strings can be very inconsistent. Generally, the brighter and louder the instrument, the better its put together. I've played some cracking instruments that were only 170 quid. Watch for wobbly necks too. They don't season the neck woods very well in cheaper instruments.
GM10
If budget isn't an issue, Tacoma Thunderchief. Probably as loud as you can get unplugged.
iamthewalrus
Another Crafter owner here (5 string ABG) - primarily use it for practicing, but I'm sure I'll gig it at least once in the future. I think it would struggle in a purely acoustic setting & the low 'B' wouldn't pop through as it's a 32" scale. Cheers, iamthewalrus
mwellbass!
I play a Dean Playmate Electro-Acoustic which I purchased for £190. It's great value for the money, has a lovely warm tone unplugged, and It's pretty decent plugged in also. However, It's goes out of tune all the time, I don't know why, it just does. But, I would recommend this bass.

If you read the reviews they come out on top. I have used it for a couple of Sunday night gigs but want to sell if you are interested as I no longer do that gig. It is practically brand new, not even had a string change yet and is in a new gig bag also. I'm open to offers! Cheers, Simon.
