i have an "OK" cheap one off ebay - but based on that experience....

spend money to get a solid, not laminated top.
light strings work better - you can just turn up louder
make sure you like the action as adjustment is slow and painful to do
check the string volume balance on the pickup - mine is quiet on the lower strings.
If its anything like mine, it will go out of tune a lot.

Well cheers for the heads up, unfortunately where i live there aren't too many guitar shops and therefore no acoustic basses so i'm going to have to travel for that. But thanks for the advice.

Washburn AB series are a good start, I have a second hand AB40 that just hits the nail on the head everytime. AB models come up from time to time so just keep your eyes peeled.

I don't know what your budget is but if you are looking to not part with much cash I'd recommend the Harley Benton HBB30.

At £115 it's great value and sounds just fine. I wanted a cheap acoustic to leave in the living room so I can just pick it up for a couple of minutes here and there and not worry if it gets jumped on by the kids.

I'd recommend the Takamine EG512 as well - best bass out there in its price range.

Or, if money isn't an issue - one of these

Edit - just noticed there's an EG512 in the 'for sale' forum. Nice price too.

Cheers y'all
I've used a Washburn AB 20 fretless 4 string for 15 years. Huge amounts of interest and compliments from other bassists and punters alike.
This model has the slatted soundhole, spruce top and mahogany back/sides with a piezo saddle pickup and onboard controls. I am not so sure this particular model "20" is still made.
I haven't tried the expensive Takamine, looks pretty cool though.

Yeah did spot this one but i was wondering what the deal is on postage. What i mean is did it arrive in a playable state straight away? I've never liked buying stuff off the net but to get it at that price is really good.

The postage is £8 and it was playable straight out of the box. I was impressed, especially for that sort of money.

i bought a crafter ba400eq (i think thats the name) from ebay about 6 months ago. got it for £40 when the rrp was about £240 and its in perfect condition. i love it, use it more than my electric bass for just sitting in my room and making up tunes or playing along to stuff. it really does deserve some new strings cos the ones on it look VERY old

definitely try before you buy on acoustics. Depending on how they're made, the response across the strings can be very inconsistent. Generally, the brighter and louder the instrument, the better its put together. I've played some cracking instruments that were only 170 quid. Watch for wobbly necks too. They don't season the neck woods very well in cheaper instruments.

Another Crafter owner here (5 string ABG) - primarily use it for practicing, but I'm sure I'll gig it at least once in the future. I think it would struggle in a purely acoustic setting & the low 'B' wouldn't pop through as it's a 32" scale.

I play a Dean Playmate Electro-Acoustic which I purchased for £190. It's great value for the money, has a lovely warm tone unplugged, and It's pretty decent plugged in also. However, It's goes out of tune all the time, I don't know why, it just does. But, I would recommend this bass.

Mind you, anyone one would at the steal of a price I snaffled mine for... even full price it's good value, with nice acoustic tone and a good pre-amp with built in tuner.

their bottom of the range one

looks like excellent value for money £200 rrp but you'd have to play it to make a proper decision...

I have a Fender BG 31 in red. If you read the reviews they come out on top. I have used it for a couple of Sunday night gigs but want to sell if you are interested as I no longer do that gig. It is practically brand new, not even had a string change yet and is in a new gig bag also. I'm open to offers!

Cheers,

Simon.
