Walkabout transformer blown... :(

The transformer on my walkabout went pop this morning any idea where to get a replacement?

Just out of interest, how did you test it to come to the conclusion that the transformer is fooked?

[/quote] I took the cover off and found the transformer was still hot three hours after I had turned it off ... and that the transformer seems to be leaking stuff

It does sound like the transformer then. If you could disconnect it and check the output voltage that would be better. (But only if you know how to do that safely.)

You also need to find out what caused the problem in case you fry the new transformer.

I hope you get it sorted. They are superb amps.

300 odd quid for a replacement tranny ... plus a tech to fit it .... ouch

You could probably have someone wind one locally cheaper than that. If you can find the specs of the original one that is.

Is that price from Mesa themselves?

If it is, you could read the specs of the side of the transformer and try to buy a replacement from Farnell, RS or the like. (Input V, VA, output(s) V, VA etc. It's a toroidal transformer I think?

I think it might be cheaper but certainly worth a try.

Hopefully the specs ARE printed on it - a quick google for Mesa Walkabout Guts shows a pic from "that other well known bass forum" (https://www.talkbass.com/threads/amp-guts-photos-official-thread-lets-see-those-pics.513929/page-32) with specs printed on the side of the transformer, just not clear enough to make them out!

Update: over two months without an amp - it's been painful 

But it's fixed, primary winding on the transformer has gone, new replacement sent from the USA and fitted - price for transformer is not cheap - £250-300 ish

That's painful, but at least it's come back to life. These are excellent amps and very well built.
