I have built a shovel slide guitar recently. I saw Justin Johnson playing his on YouTube and thought that was fun. Mine is an old and well used shovel, I had to knock of quite a lot of old cement and crud off it before I started. I like the old and worn look..... It has a 3 pole pickup that I got from ebay, and to be honest it actually sounds quite good. Its best played with a healthy dollop of distortion. I currently have mine tuned to Eb and I am learning to play The Ace of Spades on it. Its great fun.

It would be interesting to know the tonewoods used in the shovel.

If you can find an ex-motorway maintenance guy's shovel, covered in tar, they make the best road worn shovel guitars.
(neat use of a bolt for a nut)

Hmmmm ... I'm not sure about that. You may have been fooled by a piece of relic'ing. Are you sure that's not a brand new spade that has been 'treated'?

There's a lot of this about on eBay just now.
