Good point. I could also ask them to change the neck for a maple and re spray the body with a sunburst finish 🤔

Coincidentally, the basses on which I was going to pull the trigger were : (fretted) white/maple, (fretless) 'burst/rosewood.

Got it in one.

Got a P7 5 recently - intending to fill the 'P' type gigs I seem to be doing more of, where my other main bass wasn't really right.

Possibly still in honeymoon period but haven't put it down. The pre is as useful as Aguilar / East I've owned. The neck and rolled fretwork is beautiful.

Pains me to say it - as the bass world would be a worse place without the independent luthiers - but I've been using the P7 for every gig since, over my handmade J (that cost 7x).

On some of the points raised above

  • I pretend to play poncy stuff up the dusty end, and have always had 2 octave 24 frets. I've not missed the extra 4 notes.
  • I thought I was sensitive to weight. This one is 10.2lbs but it's been fine on gigs. Like the frets, I wonder weight has been one of those self imposed rules I've lived by without revisiting.

Standard mod with new knobs ( who says you can't polish a turdbust  @Al Krow  :) )

Oooh I do like those knobs! Won't be to @dave_bass5's liking though, he specialises in pink knobs for some reason 😁

Out of interest, how much were they and could you post a link to where you got them from? The plastic 'cheap' look of the Sire bass standard knobs seem to be the most common recurring gripes from owners about their Sires.

Thanks very much for your comment on the comparison with a J bass costing 7X more - you have 100% dealt with my Mike Lull question in my earlier post.

Found these pot recommendations here on BC - can't recall the thread ..

Stacked pots are solid shaft, take these EMG fit  @ £12 set

Single pots are split shaft, used  push fit Tele type @ £6 a pair

These look good thanks! I think I'm correct I'll need to get two stacked pots (they're actually £13.90 a piece) plus two pairs of single pots (currently £5.90) a pair = just under £40 in total?

Was possibly thinking replacement black, but silver to match the bridge and offset by the dark tort PG could work very well too.  Hmmm... decisions, decisions!  All I do know is that they won't be pink, like Dave's knobs 😂

I managed to get Andertons to discount their current list price for an Alder P7 5 v2 and gigbag by a little over £40 after a bit of arm twisting, so it's clear that discount is pretty much going to pot then 😁

That is a good looking bass. Ignoring the headstock. It's a good looking bass up to the top of the neck 😊😊

Yeah, that headstock is just plain wrong lol.

The extended headstock also makes putting these basses in normal sized gig bags a bit of a challenge.

Or use the Sire gig bag 😉

That would be a bit obvious though wouldn't it? 😁

If the Sire gig bag is as good as you say it is, a couple of my gig bags could be finding themselves out on the street (well not literally)...

The bags are very nice. Not sure they are worth £60, but still better than average. If you want to swap yours for my Gator let me know. The Sire bags are a bit slimmer which is handy.

Good job Andertons are currently doing 25% off the Sire bags currently isn't it? Or 50% off if you ask nicely when you're buying a Sire bass off them 😉

Slim is always good (provided they are well padded - particularly at the base) - will nicely offset my lack thereof.

My Sire 5 string Jazz used to travel in the Thomann deluxe leather style padded gig bag thing without a fuss. Not an expensive bag either for the pocket size and the padding.

That sounds really good, you got a link to the one you went for? Not that I need one right now, but it's always good to know about decent gig bags! My Gator is fine but I'd prefer a tougher outer layer.

Here it is.

https://m.thomann.de/gb/thomann_e_bass_gigbag_premium.htm

I've had it nearly two years. It takes a weird headstock well and the pockets are huge. I transport my basses in it for rehearsal and such like when I want to carry as few bags as possible and as little weight as possible, can't be bothered with a hard case, pedal case, then another bag for cables and stuff.

They're good value in my opinion, they are heavy though as a gig bag.

Well i went straight to the source and Mikey C. sent me two for free when they first came out 🙂

I had one of these a few years ago, when i got my Lakland DJ5.  Very nice bag although i wasn't keen on the look, nor the weight.

Fixed 😁

Can't say I'm a fan of the Beaky headstock , but the rest of the bass does enough to make me tolerate it.

FWIW Sires fit easily into a Mono Vertigo.

My Sire V7 was the reason i got a Mono Vertigo a few years ago, but the combined weight and bulk meant i didnt use it much, and then sold it.

Fair enough. I'm a clumsy f*cker and definitely need the added protection :)
