solo4652
*Dancing Queen*. Can't type today. My band wants to have a crack at this. I don't like it at all. How to make a sow's ear out of a silk purse, in my opinion. What does everybody else think, please? KingPrawn
In my opinion, They are some of the greatest lines to play. Full of energy and presence. You have a responsibility not to mess it up.
solo4652
Yes - agreed. Does it work as a metal/rock song? I'm not convinced at all. How well does the original bassline fit into this cover? Edited October 18, 2017 by solo4652
lurksalot
We tried rocking it , but just couldn't nail it , parts sounded good , but it didn't gel so after trying to gig it we gave up ..... however 'Does your mother know' rocks out brilliantly 👍 Edited October 18, 2017 by lurksalot
redbandit599
When doing a version of something, I reckon it's best to learn the original first- then make your own natural changes to make it heavier/ rockier etc. It's a great song, so will go down well in most places. In one of my bands we did something a bit like this with Mama Mia - not quite so quick, girl singer - guaranteed dancers and smiles https://youtu.be/Ql89SQzpquU

But no - the band wants to do Dancing Queen.

Thunderpaws
Check out Paul Gilbert’s live version. Was on one of his live albums a few years ago. It was a Japanese recording. Just looked, here it is: https://g.co/kgs/LkFqwn

Dood
Thank you. I'll have a listen.
That's a cool version! I have to admit I always have a pre-emptive cringe reaction when someone says they do a metal version of a pop song. Yes, there are some great, well thought out deconstructions of songs, but my ears want to explode the minute I hear a really obvious 'Djent' ostinato shoe-horned in to the song. I heard a cover of a C Aguilera track the other day that completely shot wide of the mark. Sure, they managed to get some screamo vocals in there and the obligatory double kick drum over cooking, but it just all sounded a bit too... well, I cringed! xgsjx
I absolutely hate dancing queen, so IMO you can only improve it. If I could have my way, a metal cover would be ideal. Get every copy of the f***ing song that exists, including digital, bury them as deep as you can & pour molten metal into the hole, covering every copy there is. dmccombe7
Liked that. Not too over the top and not too far away from the original that its not recognisable. Dave

Having grown up with punk rock I still absolutely love this song and think it is probably the best song written since the heyday of the Beatles! Delberthot
Voulez Vous is incredibly easy to turn into a rock song. Myself and our guitarists are both from rock band backgrounds so we tend to approach this song from a rock point of view and it works really well
charic
It's a cool version, rock rather than metal (too soft IMHO) but good
uk_lefty
Dreadful. If you're going to rock it up do it properly, not just have a mildly distorted guitar playing over a carbon copy version of the original.

The individual instruments are superb, but all together, it's horrible.

lowdown
Although it is Rutger Gunnarsson on 'Dancing' Queen', he isn't on every ABBA tune. An English studio player (Mike Watson) who lived in Sweden at the time, did a bit as well An interesting little read about both of them here.
