highwayman
Today (20th October) is the tenth anniversary of bassist Paul Raven's death. Whilst he had a varied career, it's his compositions and playing on Killing Joke's Night Time album that resonates with me more than anything; Kings and Queens, Eighties and especially the biblical Love like Blood - my favourite bassline of all. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TnpwuRlXbhk
scrumpymike
Thanks for remembering Paul and getting my day off to a good start . If you want a great, rock-solid, driving rhythm section, that was it.
Deep Thought
Saw Killing Joke twice during the 'Night time' era. Awesome album, and they were storming live, although the first time, Exeter somewhere, Jazz had his boiler suit on and warpaint, and really looked intimidating. Second time, Elephant Fayre in Cornwall, he was wearing a leather jacket, long hair and looked like Kevin Keegan! Paul Raven did a fine job on both occasions. At Exeter, as they were going offstage, some kid got onstage and was posing triumphantly. Raven came up behind him and shoved him unceremoniously back into the crowd! I think it's got a lot to do with his basslines that that album sounds as good as it does-especially on 'love like blood ', which let's face it, is all about that bass line. fleabag
He had a great sound indeed I saw them live at a CND rally at Trafalgar Square in 1980 Raven hadn't joined at this point, as Martin Glover ( Youth ) was still the KJ bassister http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBw3W3zh-ew
fleabag
Interesting note : Dave Grohl palyed drums for KJ in the early 2000's
Mellowman
I was at the same comprehensive as Paul in the early seventies. He was a year younger and lived in Tettenhall near Wolverhampton. New he was destined to be a rockstar. He always had “that” attitude and very sure of himself. Very sad when he died.
Roger2611
I saw them on the Night Time tour, I love Love Like Blood, I think it has one of the best drum / bass sounds of anything of its time, I am ashamed to say I didn't even know he had passed away, I will give the album a spin tonight
Skybone
His work with Prong was great, as well as with KJ.
