Woodinblack
I would say black black black, but black white black if thats all you can get. Tort is a crime against nature on a black bass. But TBH, I would call it a crime against nature on any instrument.

DGBass
black/black/maple is a classic combo on a P or a J. Tort for me works with sunburst/cream/natural wood finishes, and maple/rosewood or ebony fingerboards
Painy
Get a chrome guard and channel your inner Phil Lynott. (BWB from the options available though).
Donnyboy
Black/white/black gives a nice bit of definition against the black body & with the maple neck/board always looks stunning to my eyes.
LewisK1975
Update - Tried a BWB guard on it. Didn't like it! What I neglected to tell everyone is that the body is actually Metallic Black! Can almost look a bit Silver depending on how it catches the light. Raslee
Here's my 79 P with various pickguards over the last month. Currently sporting the black on black but I did like the tort which was on a spare black ply body I tried...interestingly the ply body sucked the great inherent tone so went back to the original right away Edited December 17, 2017 by Raslee
Davo-London
White is my least favourite. Too contrasty. Black gets my vote looks more serious than white. Tort is OK. Obviously IMHO. davo
thegummy
Just seeing that I said that tort only works with rosewood fretboards. Since posting that I took a risk and installed one on my Strat with maple fretboard and it is one of the nicest looking instruments I've seen. Paul S
Black, black, maple is my favourite. Here's my JV Squier that sports those materials.

LewisK1975
This is what I've ended up with at the moment: It's an off-white / parchment guard from a 2006 USA Precision. Still undecided, but as it's only being used as a backup I won't lose any sleep right now...

Clawhammer
I would like a tort pickguard for a Squier p/j Precision. Where can I buy one?

Northwest Guitars sell them I think they are about £15 and they say they fit most fenders/squiers
MartinB
Tort on black is lovely, so long as it leans more towards brown than red. But black/black/maple is a classic too. White on black is a bit basic, like a starter bass.
LewisK1975
Picked up a gold anodised guard from @Marc S the other day. I think it looks awesome! Think this settles it once and for all... second pic shows how the metallic black works better against the metal guard!

I think it looks just fine with a maple board. My Sadowsky has a 59 burst, maple board and tort guard and she’s gorgeous!
grenadilla
I have the usual black and white, plus white pearl. Metal guards are industrial-looking and a brushed aluminum or steel would toughen it up to the Industrial Age .? They do have extra holes usually . Marc S
I'm a fan of tort guards, on black.....or white, erm and sunburst too But I must say Lewis, that looks rather nice - much more so than I'd expected Looks great with the maple board too. I want my gold guard back now! lol EDIT: PS. Although it was a tarnished guard, from a Roadworn P, it has polished up rather nicely What did you use to clean it up Lewis?
