TheGreek Posted November 4, 2017 Posted November 4, 2017 (edited) I was wondering if there's a more popular. Expect the result may be weighted by Fender owners Edited November 5, 2017 by TheGreek Quote
paul_5 Posted November 4, 2017 Posted November 4, 2017 (edited) Frankly I wouldn’t put a potato anywhere near any of my basses. (4 in a row for me though). Edited November 4, 2017 by paul_5 Quote
Roland Rock Posted November 4, 2017 Posted November 4, 2017 (edited) Haha I thought this thread was about potatoes too. ..and they all look good in their place, except 4+1 Edited November 5, 2017 by Roland Rock Quote
discreet Posted November 4, 2017 Posted November 4, 2017
I think there should be a 'No preference' option.
What, you don't like potatoes? Not even chips? Quote
Paul S Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 4+1 No mention of more exotic tone tubers like yam, yakon, eddoe and the like. I'm disappointed. Quote

Lozz196 Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 4 a side, not cos I`m Fender biased, it`s just easier knowing they all turn the same way to tune up/down. Quote
stingrayPete1977 Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 There's no 3+2 or 2+3 option for BigRedX. Quote
discreet Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 (edited)
I dont get the potato reference.
The OP had a typo in the heading, 'tubers' instead of 'tuners'. Cue terribly clever potato references. That's also why I posted a picture of a tuba (tuber = tuba, geddit?). Er... you had to be there, I suppose. Marvin Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 I like the tuners to be appropriately positioned to suit the headstock. Basically I'm not really fussed as long as overall they look good. Quote
seashell Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 4 in a row is just more aesthetically pleasing. I've always thought this, since long before I played bass. I just love the look of a Fender headstock. Quote
Chris2112 Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 I prefer 2+2 for the fact it affords a shorter headstock (think Pedulla Buzz, Zon Sonus, Spector NS etc etc). That doesn't look right on a Fender type shape though. Jazz has to be four inline for me. A bit like nut width though, it's one of those statistics that really makes no difference to me buying a bass. Quote

Cato Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 I've never owned bass with a 3 + 1 but I've always thought it was an aesthetically pleasing solution to the monster headstocks on most Fender style basses. Quote
Hobbayne Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 I prefer the 4 in a row Fender type, although I find the MM 3+1 quite quirky. Quote
Painy Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 I only play fives but it depends on the shape of the headstock. Traditional style headstocks (Fender/Musicman) 4+1. More symmetrical or paddle style headstocks (Warwick/Spector/Ibanez SR) 3+2. Seen a few 5 string Maruszczyks recently with a Fender style headstock in a 3+2 and it just doesn't look right to me somehow. Quote
tauzero Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 Surely 4 a side is for 8-strings? Can't understand why people want headstocks, stupid primitive things that make a bass heavier and less well-balanced, and more likely to unintentionally jab the vocalist in the ear. With a headless, I have to actually mean it. Quote
"Unintentionally jab our vocalist in the ear" there was nothing unintentional when I gave our guitarist a black eye with the end of my Precision headstock, he doesn't stand so close to me nowadays.... (to explain, I am not some kind of bass wielding physco he was jumping around like an idiot I just provided him with something to crash in to) Quote
yorks5stringer Posted November 6, 2017 Posted November 6, 2017 I've used to have issues when swapping between 2 of my 5 string basses: one was 3+2, the other 2+3. Quote
