Not the band you are in now.

What I mean is, the band that come to mind when when you think of who had the greatest impact on you. You feel like they are yours and untouchable, even though they may be flawed in their output or as human beings.

For me it's Nirvana. Blue will understand what I mean when I say it's because I was there at the time it all happened. I've loved bands more since, but they will always be the ones that had the biggest impact.

Yours?

Can't, the list is too long; they all had their part to play, and I wouldn't rank any above (or below...) another. A sample..? Well, just a few, but there's more, many more...

Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Fairport Convention, The Incredible String Band, The Martin Spicer Band, Porpoise, The Alan Stirling Band, The Daub'z, Ry Cooder, NIN...

(Drops off to sleep, numbed fingers caressing the keyboard until they slip away. Low snoring ensues...)

For me it’s Thin Lizzy. Always my favourite. And Gordon Giltrap. Next year marks my 40 year as a Giltrapophile!

But closely followed by ELO, Rush and Horslips.

Jethro Tull. In all the lineups. Always interesting, always entertaining and some of the best live gigs I have ever bee to. Saw them first in 1970 and they were brilliant. Saw them last in 2011 and they were still brilliant. A musical backdrop to my life.

Probably Opeth for me

Edit: Frank Turner would be a distinct possibility too, there's something about his lyrics that really identify with me.

A little known UK band from the late 80s called The Dogs D'Amour. They caught me at just the right time and made me want to be a musician and not just a listener. For those not in the know, they always looked the biz, had the coolest instruments and sat somewhere between the Stones, the Faces, T-Rex and Hanoi Rocks.

Rush since 1976 its the only band i've followed and bought all their albums.

2112 was so different from anything else i had listened to and since that point they matured into the amazing musicians they still are.

It has to be Queen.

I was immersed in such a wide range of music as a kid. My family always had music playing I think. My cousins would put on all sorts of cool music when I was tiny. everything from The Damned to Jeff Wayne, Jean-Michel Jarre to Neil Diamond. But there was always one band that stood out, Queen. I learned so much about song writing and music theory from absorbing myself in their music. I expected that I'd play guitar first of all as Brian May was such a standalone character at the time.. The story behind the Red Special, the hair, the guitar solos etc.. but then I discovered this rather quiet chap at the back with an instrument that looked..and sounded very, very cool indeed. I was smitten with it and like a terrier with a bone... it's been about 30 years now ha ha.. I'd like to shake John's hand and say a little thank you.

Early Japan.  Those first two albums.  Man alive, they were nothing like the Roxy Music copycats that came towards their first demise.

Scratchy glam, punk, cod-reggae, weirdness. Derided by many and adored by even less at the time.  It was just so good.
