floFC
Why do you think it was originally fretted? I couldn’t see any lines where the frets would have been removed from. Any close ups?
Beedster
Early 70s FL boards were plain, no lines or dots. Might be a rare exception, but most likely it was originally fretted. C
floFC
I see, thanks. I really can't see any traces of frets. In any case, the fretboard is beautiful.
Beedster
I imagine it's a replacement fretboard as opposed to a very good de-fret. As I said, it could just possibly be original, a custom order perhaps, but if so I've never seen one like it.
Aero71
There are no lines or marks from previous frets, so I think the fretboard was replaced.
Dan Dare
Looking at the thinness of the fretboard in the end-on photo, I'd say it's likely the board was planed when the frets were pulled to remove the slots. They are normally thicker than that.
Beedster
Think it's just been shaved a few times to be honest, occupation hazard with a rosewood board, I suspect you'd still see where the frets were if it had been shaved to remove the fret slots. wateroftyne
Where are the side dots? On the note = fretless Betwen the notes = fretted
Beedster
My factory US precision fretless has side dots between the notes, bloody annoying to be honest, and there's a thread about it on somewhere. I think the upshot of that thread was that they make the necks, dots and all, and then a few of them are destined to be f/less. No idea if that was the case in '71 though, more your area of expertise WoT?
franzbassist
Early 70s factory fretless Ps were definitely dots on the line and not mid "fret".
Aero71
These are mid fret dots, both fretboard dots and side dots, so there would be no problem if you decide to get it fretted again.
Dan Dare
May struggle to re-fret that board because it's so thin. They'd likely bite into the neck material itself
Tonteee
I would worry the same, sadly. Radius looks a bit odd to me, too. I wonder if you can re-board a neck. Something I'm sure one of BC's ultra clever luthierie would know - just not something I'd thought about previously. Or maybe just enjoy a fretless 1971 P neck! Lovely grain on that Rosewood. franzbassist
You can definitely re-board it. I had Brook Guitars in Devon convert a maple boarded P to an ebony unlined fretless and they did an amazing job - even kept the original nut!
