They were not a bad bass, I brought one new when they first came out, it was a bit of a "meh" bass, it played ok, sounded ok and looked ok and that was about it!

I had the 5 string version, later ones had black hardware IIRC. Played well enough, body was bubinga I think, preamp was terrible though with that brittle tinny treble frequency all budget preamps had at the time. A cheapo Artec or something would improve it tenfold. Paid £50 for it and sold it on here for a similar amount #nocrook

I've never actually tried one of Vintage's bases, though I've owned one of their guitars for years and always thought it was a great instrument for the money. If that specimen was built after a certain date then it will have Wilkinson pickups and hardware in it, which are not to be sniffed at around this price point!

A mate of mine had one of these and played tons of gigs with it, always sounded good in his hands. £50 is a good deal from where I'm sat
