JohnR
I have an MTD Kingston 6 string bass which has 18mm string spacing. I plan on changing the stock bridge for a Hipshot and wonder if there would be any problems in installing an A style bridge with 17mm spacing. I am guessing that it should not make much technical difference other than to playability. Does anyone have any experience of doing something similar and reducing string spacing? Thanks John
A.G.E.N.T.E.
I can't see any problem with that. If you wanted to increase the string spacing, that could lead you to a problem like runing out of fretboard. There are several brands out there with adjustable bridges. I think it's just a matter of personal preference. Edit: i Just remembered that depending on what kind of pickups you have, changing string spacing can generate some misalignments between strings and pole pieces.
