Cioks DC5 Query (assistance needed)

Merry greetings to all. I have a question regarding the DC5. Specifically regarding the potential to use a combination of the Cioks cables to power a couple of pedals. Here goes...

Step 1 :

What I am proposing is to combine the currents (mA) of one of the 300mA and one of the 100mA outputs using the Parallel Adapter Flex cable, therefore producing 400mA at 9v. 

Step 2:

The output of the Parallel Adapter Flex cable will then be connected to the Split Adapter FLEX cable in order to route power to two separate pedals.

Step 3 :

Finally, the 2 outputs from the Split Adapter FLEX cable will be connected to a EHX Supar Pulsar and EHX POG2 using the standard Boss style Type 1 Centre Negative cables.

 

My question is, is this possible/suitable? Does anyone foresee any potential issues with this setup. I am rather limited on options for a combination of reasons so really hope that this is a suitable option.

I've been able to power a Two Notes Le Bass (500mA) and Effectrode PC-2A (400mA) from the 12V 300mA outputs of my DC5 without using any special cables, and nothing exploded! Also had no issues with a supposed 150mA Mooer Tender Octaver from one of the 100mA sockets. You may find those pedals with fine from a single 100mA socket even though on paper they shouldn't.

YMMV of course, I take no responsibility if your pedal explodes as a result of this!

Lastly, your plan might introduce some noise into the signal chain as some EHX digital pedals tend to do this when sharing power so are best run isolated.

Input appreciated. The only slight issue here is that the other 2 100mA outputs would be used to power other pedals (3 in total) so I am likely to be already pushing the limits. 

Ideally I just need to find out if that cable combo is suitable. 

Alternatively, I could go for the Strymon Ojai but that would involve a bit of pedalboard modification (which I cant really be bothered with) and the 2 part power supply isnt ideal either.

If you haven’t bought the Cioks yet, you might want to look into the new OneSpot CS6, looks very similar but has some 500mA outs, plus like its bigger brethren is very flexible when it comes to ignoring the mA labels on the outputs, as long as you don’t exceed the total for the entire brick.

@dannybuoy the pedals won’t explode because you are giving the pedals less current draw, a pedal will take its maximum draw it requires, so if it ideally wants 500mA but you give it 300mA it will take it but possibly not work to it’s full capability.

You only fry a pedal when you give it more voltage than it wants, that’s is danger territory.

@uzzell as long as you have you voltages correct and you have done your current draw maths per pedal you should be OK. On different power sources I have Daisy chained in order to effectively use the right current draw, that includes a One Spot, a Decibel 11 Hotstone Deluxe and a Cioks DC5

Seems a lot of hassle maybe just look at a did power supply? 

 

The new new strymon Ojai R30 is all in one rather than two bits but there are many more. 

No isolation between the outlets aswell not a big thing if the pedals are ok with it but the pog and pulsar I’m guessing would add a bit of noise, being big drawing digital pedals

@Cuzzie There is still a risk if you can't predict how a power supply is going to react when you push it to its limit. It might gracefully shut off, it might go to in smoke, it might even go a little haywire and take some pedals down with it!

Thanks for posting about the Ojai. I was in a shop on Sat getting my Cali76 CB and was shown one of these, but I instantly forgot the name and have been trying to search for this brand. Still going to get a Cioks DC-5 but I’m glad I finally tracked Ojai down. I’m sure the one in the shop was orange though.

Maybe see what the pedals actually need? It is often very different from what they say.

I have an eBay DC5 copy (which has been excelent), and had to move things around a lot to get things working, specifically the Smooth hound needed as much as it said, the Zoom B3 needed far less than it said, and the VoiceLive actually worked much better on a lower voltage than it said!
