John T
This is currently on Ebay at £650. I may be wrong but from what iv'e read they were made in Japan with USA parts, now discontinued... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ernie-Ball-Musicman-Stingray-EX-4-strings-white/282628649939?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649
AndyTravis
Very near my house. £200 over my spare money fund at the minute. Asked the wife if I could borrow £200 and she said “not for a bass just after Christmas love” and I said ok... and it’s a stingray which means I’d only sell it. Delberthot
I spotted that as well but collection only so you may get it for a relatively low offer
John T
I think i'll message him, worth a punt......Japanese workmanship is pretty spot on. Manchester is only an hour from me.
John T
I'm assuming this would be a different animal to the Sterling?
AndyTravis
Nice one. Saves me explaining why £200 has gone out of the holiday pot and why there’s “another bloodyfucking stringray or whatever it’s called here after you sold the last 6”

John T
The chap has just got back to me and said - 'Don't know how old it is as they don't have a serial number'.....Hmmmm

AndyTravis
The Stingray EX is a discontiued bass Manufactured for the Japanese market by our distributor Kanda Shokai. The basses were built in Japan utilizing U.S. parts. An intresting feature is the Japanese decided to put back the old mute pads on the Stingray EX for a more historically accurate version. The basses were intended for the Japanese market only but with the advent of "webshops" they can be ordered all over the world including the U.S. Thanks Derek

John T
Yeah i just found the same AndyTravis...Also thanks for the location advice on serial number. Mudpup - Thanks for your input, you can never be too sure with these thing i guess.
John T
Seems a bargain but seller adamant there is no serial number anywhere on the bass.....
AndyTravis
Probability was bridge - that’s where older MM basses have them. someone may have sanded it off to make it look as if it’s a USA. irony is, these are more scarce.
John T
That's a fair assumption....Or changed the bridge. T'is a shame though as it could be a very nice bass but without a serial number anywhere people are always weary...Everything has a s/number
AndyTravis
The bridge won’t have been changed...nobody does a decent MM replacement with mutes. id still go for it if I had the cash.

floFC
Out of curiosity, how can you tell it is an EX/MIJ Stingray?
AndyTravis
Just now, floFC said: Out of curiosity, how can you tell it is an EX/MIJ Stingray? Not got the “san luis” thing on the back of the head...they did mute bridges when Musicman didn’t offer that. other than that - not sure.
John T
My thoughts really, this is why serial numbers exist....
John T
Hypothetically, if someone has taken the time to grind the serial number off the bridge and re chrome it would be no prob to put a decal on the headstock and try to pass it as a USA model. MrTea
What’s with the weird white patch in the top left of the body (above the pick up). Looks like 2 raised bumps in one of the photos?

Looks to me like the paper backing left behind from a sticker that's been removed (somewhat half-arsedly)
