fretmeister
I’ve been experimenting with strings lately on my P-Ray 5. I got a set of La Bella Low Tension Flats which I love. But for my current gig I need good thuddy noises for half the tunes and a bit of zing and dirt for the rest. I do not want to take 2 Basses. i have no idea why I haven’t tried it before but I put my favourite Prosteels on this evening and then stuck a load of foam under the strings and knocked the tone control down a bit. It’s not identical to the flat sound of course, but damn it’s close! And I can whip the foam out halfway through the set. i feel a bit thick for not trying it before! Bridgehouse
I find a chunk of the green foam from one of those washing up sponges to be best..

I find the yellow alternative both matches the bass and has a gentler tone.
Happy Jack
Tone foam is tricky stuff. If you can't get pre-CBS foam then modern foam that has employed wax-based products gives the best results. Be sure never to wash it though! 1

stingrayPete1977
My Stingray Classic five has a full compliment of adjustable foam dampers, one per string, I've never used them!

But at the same time if I can get away with a 10 pence dish cleaning sponge then I'll probably stick to that. I could see the mechanical version being very useful if there were many changes in a set though.

thegummy
I've tried the carole Kaye method of taping on felt but never was able to get it right, not sure what I was doing wrong.
chris_b
IMO foam sounds great in the studio, but I prefer all the dynamics I can get in the sound of my bass on a gig.

Fully agree - especially with sax, keys and harmonica in our mob.
