hooky_lowdown
Have a peavey tnt 160 and want to replace the speaker which has been replaced by a previous owner at some point and sounds flabby now. I play a P bass, so any recommendations for a good replacement speaker. We play indie/rock?
casapete
You'll first need to check the ohmage - these Peavey combos usually have 4 ohm speakers onboard to maximise the output. If the replacement speaker that's been fitted is 8 ohms, it will more than likely be affecting the output and possibly the tone. As 8 ohm speakers are often easier to find than 4's, that's probably why someone's bunged one in your combo. Your best bet then is to try and source a Peavey replacement, either a Scorpion or Black Widow 4ohm. Most users of these combos seem to think the stock speakers do a fine job I think. You could even buy a s/h Peavey 1x15 cab and use the speaker from it - again, check its the 4 ohm version though. They often come up for around £70 / £80 . Check ebay / Gumtree or put a wanted ad on here?
casapete
Also discreet is selling his TNT 160 on here at the moment. £45 ! Buy it, use the speaker and keep the rest of the combo for spares?
fleabag
The difference in perceived output by fitting an 8 ohm driver is unlikely to be even noticed. But that combo discreet is selling sounds like a bargain, and if its all original, you get a factory speaker for your cab, or keep his and use the other cab for bits of cab spares, as pete says
hooky_lowdown
I was thinking of a speaker other than a BW or Scorpion. Any recommendations? Also, could the combo handle a 2ohm speaker (if I could find one!) to get maximum power from the amp?
Bill Fitzmaurice
18 hours ago, casapete said: ohmage That's what you pay to Clapton, McCartney, Entwhistle and the like. Drivers have impedance. Peavey lists the 1502-4 Black Widow in the TNT 160. Specs are Fs 43Hz, Qes 0.38, Qms 7.9, Vas 192L, Re 3.2 ohms, Xmax 2.8mm. Many drivers come close enough to that to work, though I'd look for one with at least 4mm Xmax.
