If you thought it was a new thing we have been looking at "In These Shoes?" by Kirsty MacColl, here are the Lyrics.

I once met a man with a sense of adventure
He was dressed to thrill wherever he went
He said: Let's make love on a mountain top
Under the stars on a big hard rock
I said: In these shoes?
I don't think so
I said: Honey, let's do it here

So I'm siting at a bar in Guadalajara
In walks a guy with a faraway look in his eyes
He said: I've got a powerful horse outside
Climb on the back, I'll take you for a ride
I know a little place, we can get there for the break of day
I said: In these shoes?
No way, Jose
I said: Honey, let's stay right here

No le gusta caminar No puede montar a caballo
(I don't like to dance, I can't ride a horse)
Como se puede bailar? Es un escandolo
(How can I dance? It's a scandal)

Then I met an Englishman
Oh, he said
Won't you walk up and down my spine
It makes me feel strangely alive
I said: In these shoes?
I doubt you'd survive
I said: Honey, let's do it
Let's stay right here

No le gusta caminar No puede montar a caballo
(I don't like to dance, I can't ride a horse)
Como se puede bailar? Es un escandolo
(How can I dance? It's a scandal)

The translation is incorrect for every version I have seen so far and it still makes no sense for those that can read it anyway. (@mcnach, ¿Las palabras en inglés son mal sí? No yo, es tú no bailar y montar. )

I always think throwing in some foreign words to make a song sexy is a dangerous game, the charts have a few nonsense ones in lately.

Anyone got any others that come to mind?

“That is a wonderful joke,” Richie says of the lyrics. “ ‘Tam bo li de say de moi ya, Hey Jambo Jumbo.’ ” He had called a friend at the United Nations to get some African phrases. “The guy said, ‘Lionel, there’s 101 African dialects.’ ” When the singer asked for just a few words, he was told it would take a few weeks. But Richie needed them immediately — so he churned out his own dialect.

I've always had a soft spot for this very moving Spanish love song:

La llama es un cuadrúpedo
Que vive en grandes ríos como el Amazonas
Tiene dos orejas, un corazón, una frente
Y un pico para comer miel.
Pero está provisto de aletas para la natación.
Las llamas son más grandes que las ranas
Las llamas son peligrosas, así que si ves
Uno donde personas bañándose, grita, mira, hay llamas

Very lovely, I'm sure you will agree.

It looks like a literal and half-arsed translation into Spanish, and in one case they got the verb wrong... but it's pretty normal as far as translations in songs go. You'd imagine they'd use someone who actually speaks the language, right?

No le gusta caminar - He doesn't like to walk (nothing about dancing on that one!)

No puede montar a caballo - literally and in isolation "no puede" = "he can't", however... if you say "no puede montar a caballo" it implies that there's some kind of impediment... either physical, or maybe he's not allowed to. When you really mean that the guy just doesn't have the ability/know-how... we'd use "saber": "No sabe montar a caballo".

But I don't know what the right person should be... the Spanish ones are in third person while the English ones in first person. I would assume the English is the correct one... so it should be "No me gusta caminar, no se montar a caballo"

Similar story with the other bit...

should I stay or should I go, supposed to be Spanish backing vocals but complete rubbish apparently

It's again translated mostly literally, so it doesn't sound quite right to a Spaniard, but the words make total sense on that one at least!

The pronounciation is awful, 'though, it took me a few listens to figure out what he was singing :D
