Some blues guitarists would sell their soul (it is said) to play certain licks. I think I'd trade mine to play like Larry Kimpel does on here.

Nice bass going on. Shame on me, id never heard of Larry Kimpel. Dennis Chambers laying down a heavy groove too.

The bass is lovely. I think Kimpel is more of a star in the gospel world than funk or jazz so it took this track to make me aware of him. Old soul boy that I am, I love the reference to Rufus & Chaka Khan's 'Stop on By' right near the end. Heaven.

That must be it. Being a mahoosive fan of 70s funk I thought I knew all the top players but I know next to nowt about the gospel scene.

Of recent or contemporary bands playing funk, none come better than Down To The Bone. Check out this

They've been pretty quiet over the last few years with no new albums since 2014's Dig It. Wonder if they've called it a day

I'll try to find out. I thought they had something out last year but could have been a compilation.

George Duke band with Larrry Kimpel bass.

After 3:00 a great solo!...

Red-hot drumming, too! I watch the hi-hat as a 'pointer'; this bloke's good (Lil' John Roberts...). :sun_bespectacled:

You can probably guess who's behind this. And you'd be right!

There's some great music and playing on that Album.

I wonder if he sued himself for ripping off his own Bass line..!

This is one of my favourite baselines since I first hear the Wiz soundtrack after finding a vinyl of it not even knowing at the time the film existed. Great playing.

I got a Play Station 1 for my 40th birthday. Bust-a-Groove is the only game I bought. I think I'm hearing a Fender Jazz on here - what do you think? Bass player is credited on Discogs I think, but I'm supposed to be working...

I can't remember if I put this up before. If I have twice can't hurt.

The fabulous Nikki Glaspie on drums and her band The Nth Power, featuring 2 bass players on the first video.

Spiral made me realise how great music could be - how it could break your heart with its beauty and intensity. Carlton BURNS on here.

Thinking about it, Popwell doesn't hold back either.
