OK the bass has been modded with an extra pup and an active circuit but I couldn't help noticing that the finish looks... sh*t! :)

Now it could be my eyes thinking that the bass looks like it's been bodged with fibreglass so I emailed the seller asking if there had been any kind of damage, repair or refinishing of the bass; "not to the best of my knowledge it is as far as i am aware as standard".

It doesn't look much better from the front.

The bottom of the bass looks decidedly matt and quite frankly fecked. What do you think?

Christ knows what is going on that. It's definitely has some paint brushed on the bottom, but I've never seen anything like that before. It's like the crazing you get when you use two types of incompatible paint. But even the glossy bit looks like it was painted in in a barn full of wood shavings. :)

Surprised you need to ask :)
Looks like sh*t and the seller is one of those 'make it seem like a real bargain whilst not providing answers to the important questions' types.
Worth £150 max if you're prepared to take the risk and get the work done

Yeah I've seen that before. Gert lump of the lacquer has fallen off the bottom and it's been painted black with car paint.
That would be my guess ...

S/N suggests Japanese, 84-85 ..

It obviously looks like the kind of bodge filler job I'd have done on my Mk I Escort when 'a were lad' but I couldn't believe that the seller thought it looked "standard"! I needed affirmation that I wasn't cracking up

Hardly surprising that the seller is listing the questions that he feels add some weight to his listing... oddly enough he hasn't posted mine.

looks like someone has painted over tape or filler with car or boat paint ... don't touch with barge-pole (although the bass may have been), esp at that price. There's a nice looking HW1 on BassChat for £320 and this guy wants £400 for this dubious beast plus a practice amp
looks like the mods were a complete botch job and they have painted over it?
I had to read that twice Kev, I thought you were talkin' bout our mods for a min.

The guy is adamant that I'm/we're imagining it... it's absolutely standard, no damage/respray! :)

Thats defo been re-finished badly

you can see brush marks on the base and crazing were either in-compatiable paints have been used or the drying guide lines not adhered to.
The flatness of the finish could be down to wiping the newly painted area with thinners, this could dull the lacquer.

What I always do in these situations is:

Run awaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay

Definitely a growler. If the seller thinks it looks original then maybe he should've gone to Specsavers.

Stinks of bad haddock this one

Looks like he is trying to make a quick buck, he has been asked by a lot of people about the dodgy finish so he has removed the picture with the tell-tale signs of a 'cowboy' job. Why can't people just be honest, I am pretty sure he would still sell it but perhaps for half the price.

Why is the clint eastwood Good bad and ugly theme in my head!?

Well, it sold this morning to what looks like an eBay newcomer/occasional user (4 feedback), so I've taken the liberty of pointing them at the previous auction and pointing out the damage which the seller seems to be blind to.
