4001 Tone Cap Mod(?)

Hi,
I'm considering doing .0047uF cap mod on bridge p/u tone control of my Maya Rickenfaker.
Found what seems to be a good link here:

Has anybody tried this on their own bass, & does it make much of a difference to tone?
Would be interested to hear any opinions.
Thanks

Hi Rick,
You can do this sort of mod on any bass. All it does is rob the signal of low end (or to put it another way, shift the tonal emphasis toward the midrange and upper frequencies) - so if you're after more twang 'n' clang from a given pickup, give it a try. Obviously, the overall signal level from that pickup will be slightly reduced, too.

It doesn't have to be a .0047uF cap, either. Experiment with different values and see if you like the result. If you decide to keep the cap onboard, do what Rickenbacker do and make it switchable (just add a simple single-pole on/off switch that bypasses the cap) - then you've got the best of both worlds.

I have found normal tone controls in effective so i put one of these in my charvel

very effective mod, i have just a volume and the varitone works great for me, with the added bonus of 6 clearly marked settings all of which sound different

Thanks Ken & Steve.
Should have mentioned, bass has already got the cap. I like the sound, but is significantly lower than neck p/u.
I'm going to try bypass mod this weekend (great weather!). If I like the sound, will put a push-pull pot in, to switch it in out.
The varitone idea looks interesting too. I'm going to try that, when I can get hold of variable switch.
Thanks again.

Cheers Steve.
Think I'm going to stick with the bypass mod on Rickenfaker. But I'm definitely now going get one of those varitones for my P-Bass.
Thanks again
Nick
