ardi100
Hi, I've been offered first rights on my school's unused (2nd) Zeller double bass. It feels smaller than other basses I've played and when I measured it, the string length bridge to nut was around 40 inches. So, two questions, then. Firstly, what size is it? Secondly, should I buy it even if it's not exactly 3/4? It's in great nick and sounded lovely. We haven't talked price yet but I think it'll be cheap. Any thoughts appreciated. Oh, and can you just get a longer end pin if it's too low?
guyl
I'm no expert, but I'd guess that the sound is far more important than the size. If you get a great sound AND it fits in the car - that sounds like a bonus! You can change the endpin to suit.
velvetkevorkian
40-41" is a pretty standard 3/4 string length, and should be pretty comfortable to play. There's not really a defined size for double basses but the Zellers are pretty good value. If the price is right I would go for it.
BigBeatNut
Bob Gollihur to the rescue. DB SIZE FAQ FWIW it's possible to place the bridge incorrectly on any upright and finish up with a string length that doesn't reflect the size of the bass. So body dimensions are a better guide. Andy
