I don't know if this has shown up here before, but ..............

Solo bass playing often seems to descend into un-melodic indulgence that is best saved for behind closed doors, but I just saw this video on YouTube and I thought that it was a beautifully rhythmic and melodic bit of solo bass playing:

Nice stuff!

That's the sort of stuff I can hear in my head but can never play.. He has a charm about his playing style; it looks technically challenging to do but he doesn't make it feel or sound like that, which is really cool..

Anyone with a better ear/eye than me know roughly what he's doing here technique wise? I can't make out how he's getting so much out of his right hand - I'm something of a newb with the whole slapping thing?

I suspect he's probably played flamenco guitar at some stage, seems to be doing a fair bit of downward finger strumming in association with a busy thumbing slap style. It's actually the thumb stuff I like least, if that was taken out it would probably sound much more musical.

I had a bit of a search around when I first came across this video and as far as I can tell the guy is called Gustavo Dalfarra, or maybe Gustavo Dal Farra.

I really love this piece. Most bass solos are just masturbation, but that's actually music.

Saw him too last year - I really don't like this sort of thing ordinarily but he was just mesmerising - lovely fluid technique & superb sense of melody. :)
