antonio_das_cruzes Posted February 18, 2018 Posted February 18, 2018 Greetings! Recently I started using some flatwounds on one of my bass for a more jazzy tone, but now I want to string up my 5 string and ain't able to find a .045 - 0.145 flatwound set. It seems string companies aren't producing flatwound low b's with .145 gauge, which is what I use on a short scale so it doesn't go flabby. Anybody know why is that? However, I found out this guy, that produces custom strings on order: http://www.garrygoodman.com/sub_contra_flatwounds.htm Anybody has any experience with him or may have heard about? Quote
CameronJ Posted February 18, 2018 Posted February 18, 2018 It’s most likely because, as a general rule, if you have a roundwound string and a flatwound string of the same gauge, the flatwound string will be quite a bit higher in tension than the round. Therefore, to achieve the same tension you’re used to with rounds, you can use lighter gauge flats. I imagine the tension on a .145 flatwound string would be like playing a suspension bridge cable! Mike1962 Posted March 7, 2018 Posted March 7, 2018 Garry's strings are excellent. He can make pretty much what you want. I had a custom made set for an 8 string Overwater 38" scale made a few years ago. Quote
