shamrock198804
Hello, Could anyone help me understand the difference between D'Addario Helicore and Zyex? What I particularly would like to know is if Helicores Pizz are brighter than Zyexes and which ones feel lighter and easier for the left hand (comparing the same tension, Medium v Medium or Light v Light that is). I know strings sound differently on different instruments, but I could use some general guidance or ideas. Cheers! Jimryan
I had the helicore mediums and found them too stiff to play. Moved on to the lights and still found it too stiff. I messaged D'addario customer service fir some advice in the Zyex and they offered to send me a set in exchange for a review. Opted for the lights and loved them. Nice and gentle on the left hand, works both pizz and arco nicely and can even get a bit of slap too. My only gripe with lights was that the E sounded weak compared to the other three. This was mentioned in the feedback review and shortly after a medium E arrived in the post and that's the set I've used since. Medium E, light A, D and G. Either way, the synthetic core on the Zyex will feel easier. Personally I prefer the Zyex and continue to use them. I prefer every aspect about them. Basically, go through the contact us section on the D'addario orchestral page, explain everything and you never know, you might get an email from Sabrina offering a set of strings in exchange for a review. Won't hurt to try. James
spencer.b
I thought the med. helicores were a bit like spiro mittels , maybe a touch less tension , pretty bright string , zyex medium are a lot lower tension , possibly one of the lowest tension metal strings? I like zyex on one of my basses, they have some of the sustain of metal core strings but are a little bit thumpier and easier to get moving

D'Addario UK
Hi guys, I just spoke to our Orchestral Specialist. Zyex will have a lower perceived tension as it is a more malleable / flexible material. They will however take a little longer to break in than other strings. They are a lot warmer and a variation on a synthetic gut material. The Helicore are stranded steel core so a little stiffer feeling but generally brighter and quicker to break in. There is also a lot of different ranges in the Helicore series dependent on the style you play, there is a set dedicated to pizzicato playing, a hybrid set etc... Other than that you guys seem to have discovered the differences for yourselves. Adam.
