bazzbass
I have 2 Jazz and 2 Precisions, I don't notice much if any difference. Maybe because I go from one to the other regularly depending on what string sound I'm after, I have one of each with flats and the other with rounds. I prefer a jazz with flats with an acoustic guitar, just sounds more natural. it's all in my head I am sure
Phil-osopher10
I have been spoiled by a Warwick thumb 5, which has a overall nut width of 45mm (5 string) and a string spacing of 16.5mm. I've been playing it that long when I go into music shops to try out other basses I actually really struggle with wider string spacing. On a plus, it means I never really get GAS for other basses. (Amps and cabs are a completely different story)

I learnt to play using precisions and this obviously informed my bias. With that in mind, I've noticed that most four-string production models, besides precisions, have nut widths of 38-40mm. The assumption made by manufacturers seems to be, 'the skinnier, the better'. Is this reflective of players' preferences in general? Cheers, Tobie There are lots on the skinny side, but also lots around 42mm, which is pretty decent. For me 42-43mm is ideal, but I also like 44-45mm (like the Classic 50s series Precision) as long as the profile is shallow. Some brands seem to specialise on slim, so if you are looking at them mostly that's what you'll find (Ibanez, despite their lovely ATK range, seems to do mostly slim neck instruments as far as I can see) It's annoying 'though when you find a nice bass that only comes in 'skinny'. Like you, my hands are not exactly big, but I find Jazz bass necks less comfortable.

Precisions can be anywhere between 42mm to 45mm... it's noticeable and it's not 2mm. There may be the odd Precision at 40-41mm but that's going to be rare... and that's 'slim' territory to me. bazzbass
My basses are 38.2 and 41.5mm, so yeah a whole 3mm I cannot notice that the P is wider.

I sold quite a few basses over the years mostly because I didn't get along with the neck after trying to like it... and some were really nice. Lucky you!
