Aye. "Fish on Friday" was a top show. As was Rick Wakeman's Saturday morning slot  Obviously a bit challenging for "White Van Man" who seems to be their target demographic these days...

Same story for me. I’m in sales and only listen to talk radio in the car, mainly BBC 5Live and the various podcasts I enjoy.

Well I tried listening to talking radio , but I had the same problem , they keep using the same words again and again , granted they might put them in a different order sometimes, but it's the same problem surely .

Thinking on, it's worse,  in as much as it's more like radio 1 , they seem to find the latest and newest thing then keep going on and on ....and on ....and on....

Isn't  Planet Rock centred around classic  rock songs? They eventually ran out  of tunes so yeah it does  sound repetitive. I only stick it on whilst cooking but get kerrang on too.

think the problem is there's a lot more classic rock songs around than the ones they play, I listen to Gold in the car (it's not available everywhere) plays oldies but rockier than Smooth, and they have the same problem, their playlists could do with being changed more often, it's almost like they don't expect people to be listening for a lot of hours

In that case the simplest thing would be to switch stations.

If it was me I'd be quite happy with Radio 1, Radio 2, 6 Music and Planet Rock, with a couple of days to a week on each before moving on.

I'm sure everyone here can find a handful of stations they like and can swap between to stop over-familiarity creating in.

Considering there's over 50 years of rock music to draw on I'm puzzled as to why so much airtime  on PR is given to old pony like Kiss, Foreigner, Asia, Bryan Adams etc. I've gave it one more go at 7 this morning but with an opening salvo of the atrocious Crazy Crazy Nights I lost the will to carry on

Last year I had to drive from Gatwick to Bradford and back in a day (for work!).

I spent the day with Planet Rock and discovered two new bands which I liked very much. Thankfully, whilst the first time I heard each song I missed the band name, each was played at least three times throughout the day so I got a second chance to catch them!

The problem is that it’s easier to appeal to “rock” music fans from the decades up to the 80’s because by and large, “rock” music fans from that era like the same songs!! It was after this time the all of the sub genres all splintered off, now what defines “rock” is hugely different...indie is a long way from death which is a long way from grunge which is a long way from tech.....

just do what I did, bin the radio off, sign up to iTunes and just ask Siri to play whatever the hell you want to listen to. Granted, you might miss the whatever the newest stuff is if you don’t keep your finger on the pulse,  but it might just save your sanity!!!

I really like Planet Rock. Moved over to it when Team Rock went belly up a year or so back.

Could live without the adverts, but there you go...

Most presenters on traditional commercial radio have little or no input into what is played (unless its a specialist slot or 'guest celeb' type presenter), they are given a playlist and get on with it. Maybe some of those responsible for creating the playlists might have a look at themselves though. In the end they go safe to keep listening figures up and please the advertisers without whom the station wouldnt exist.

Not aimed at me, I know, but her show is one of only two three radio programmes I make a specific point of always listening too. Her range of played music is superb, but one does have to have be able to accept that for the show to work. Great stuff.  

PS the other two being The News Quiz and I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue.

I find Radio 6 very repetitive in terms of playlists especially Radcliffes show. I used to like Craig Charles funk and soul show that was always on when I was driving to gigs but don't think it's on anymore.

Slightly OT but why aren't there any comedy radio stations? I would happily listen to some stand up and shows that appear on Radio 4 like Sorry I haven't a clue. There used to be comedy section Radio 2 Saturday mornings and it was very funny

Nowt dedicated to comedy but there' s always the 6.30 pm and 11pm slots on R4 plus repeats and vintage stuff on R4 Extra. R4E has played a lot of stuff ranging from 50s and 60s stuff like The Goons and The Navy Lark (if that's your bag) to contemporary material.  Not long ago there was the very amusing Angstrom which spoofed  Wallender and other Scandinavian 'tec dramas.

I think Craig Charles in now on Radio 2 on saturday evenings.

The show does seem to be packed with good tunes, whenever I catch it.

It least its not as bad as the Kerang tv channel.  To be fair Planet rock does have slots that concentrate on new music, but you are correct, its the new bands who need the exposure. Planet Rock is my favourite radio station because some of the presenters are genuine rock and blues musicians in their own right. Elles Bailey, Danny Bowes and even rock royalty in Alice Cooper. That's where Planet Rock blows the competition away. Sure, they play it safe in prime time slots but they need the liistening base to attract advertisers. I go back to my first sentecnce though. At least they aren't as bad as the Kerrang channel. 

 

A spotify subscription usually trumps all radio stations. I've just made the switch from my massive cd collection to streaming spotify through my new blutooth hifi and the car stereo, its so user friendly. The downside is the morality of paying the artists pennies. Given the price crunch, I can't justify £10+ for a new Halestorm cd (for example) when I can get access to almost every album ever recorded for under £10/month. Its basic common sense for the music listener, but for new musicians, they are now travelling troubadors, touring the world for a living becasue their recorded music is worth pennies. Its a troubling dilema for music fans. As for musicians, its no longer a get rich quick option, they need the passion to see it as a way of life. I follow a punk duo called the Dollyrots, who are an american band. They are married, have two young childern and they tour the world and have a part time guest presenter slot at a rock radio station and that is their life and I reckon it's got merit. Of course they'd take the millions you could get in the 80's but there is a gypsy romance to their way of life.

My guess for number one would probably be Comfortably Numb.

I wouldn't even class Kisss, Journey or Mellencamp as Rock. There is so much to chose from, even if you stick to 60s 70s 80s. The list is almost endless, I would love a slot on PR.
