peteb Posted March 22, 2018 Posted March 22, 2018 Just found out that my personal bass hero, the great Mars Cowling passed away a couple of days ago at the age of 72. What a great player… 1 Quote
Steve Browning Posted March 23, 2018 Posted March 23, 2018 Great shame. I remember watching Pat Travers support SAHB (without Alex) at Portsmouth Locarno. Superb gig and I bought the first two albums as a result. Excellent playing. Quote
oldbass Posted March 23, 2018 Posted March 23, 2018 He brought the funk to R&R, terrific playing and tone.... 1 Quote

Norm Posted March 23, 2018 Posted March 23, 2018 Saw him with Pat Travers Band at Reading 1980. Pat Travers & Pat Thrall on guitars, Mars Cowling on Bass & Tommy Aldridge on drums. Brilliant gig, Mars was a big influence on my bass playing, rock with a very funky groove & digging in grunt! 1 Quote

I was at that show as well - great gig! I always thought that the Go For What You Know Pat Travers lineup was one of the best rock and roll bands ever, playing / performance wise! 1 Quote
Bilbo Posted March 24, 2018 Posted March 24, 2018 Another fan here. Crash and Burn era. Great LP. 1 Quote

I was there too..not close to the stage but their's was the only set that me stop what I was doing and look up. Got a few live albums including the brill Donny Hathaway one but I reckon GFWYKnow may well be the best live album ever made. Very crisp. 2 Quote
Helen Goldring Posted November 2, 2024 Posted November 2, 2024 His Best playing was with Gnidrolog 1971-1973 check out the Album’s inspire of Harry’s toenail and Lady lake. You will love his bass playing Quote
paul j h Posted November 2, 2024 Posted November 2, 2024 That’s a great shame, fantastic musician. I was at that same Reading festival and as a fan was very close to the front for PT. Great clip above with Nicko on drums under the hat. The first two albums were killer. Quote
diskwave Posted November 2, 2024 Posted November 2, 2024 (edited) For my money the greatest 'Boogie Woogie' bassist that ever lived. The way he digs in but keeps the groove flowing on this is exceptional.. and that tone.. P bass, SVT mid range brilliance. Edited November 2, 2024 by diskwave 2 Quote
