Yeah, it`s filled with tiny beabs/beans; as you invert it they all fall down to the bottom over internal baffles or something and it sounds like falling rain.

Proper ones are a length of cactus with all the needles poked into the inside, and tiny shells in, so when you turn it, the sound goes on for ages, if you get the tilt angle right you can control the rate and really draw it out. Hippies loved them.
