Graham Posted March 30, 2018 Posted March 30, 2018 I woke up to the awful news that one of my all time favourite musicans, Caleb Scofield has died. Caleb was the bassist/vocalist for Cave In and Old Man Gloom and guitarist/bassist/vocalist for Zozobra. He has been a real influnce on my playing and I'm gutted I never got the chance to see him play live since I saw Cave In support the Foos 2002, when I wasn't that fussed about them. He's survived by his wife and two daughters, who must be going through the worst time. Quote
Graham Posted March 30, 2018 Author Posted March 30, 2018 I love how the camera director is confused for a moment over who's singing when the song changes. Quote
Maude Posted March 30, 2018 Posted March 30, 2018 I'm not familiar with the band or Caleb but have just seen a report on the circumstances. What a terrible thing to happen. Quote
Graham Posted March 30, 2018 Author Posted March 30, 2018 I've just seen the photos and video of the crash, it's horrific. Quote
GarethFlatlands Posted March 31, 2018 Posted March 31, 2018 Really gutted, he was a fantastic player and had such a good heavy singing voice. Spent my afternoon figuring out Cave In bass lines in tribute. Quote
Graham Posted March 31, 2018 Author Posted March 31, 2018 His heavy vocals were fantastic, Trepanning by Cave In and Gift by Old Man Gloom both immediately jump to mind as great examples. The funny thing is how much he sounded like Stephen Brodsky when he sang clean parts, I was talking to Brodsky on Twitter a couple of weeks ago as I was convinced he'd contributed vocals to Zozobra, but no - everything on those records is Scofield apart from the drums. mike257 Posted April 2, 2018 Posted April 2, 2018 Hadn't been on BC yet, but saw this sad news the other day. Big influence on my playing and writing. Jupiter and Antenna were both massive records for me. There's a fundraiser online for his family here: https://www.youcaring.com/jenscofield-1149130?fb_action_ids=10155967805242928 Appears to have been set up by a family friend with a target of $1000 dollars to try and help them out with immediate costs. Has raised about $90k now, which is incredible. Doesn't replace a husband and a father but at least helps them get by for the time being. 1 Quote
MonkeyTrick Posted April 2, 2018 Posted April 2, 2018 One of the best bassists and vocalists in heavy music. Huge influence on me. What a massive loss for the community. One of countless crushing vocal performances by the guy: 1 Quote
JamesLawrence Posted April 5, 2018 Posted April 5, 2018 One of my all time favourite players. His tone sends shivers down my spine . Lovely guy too. He'll be missed Quote
Graham Posted April 6, 2018 Author Posted April 6, 2018 Hydra Head are running a fundraiser for the family too - reissued Zozobra vinyl, a memorial shirt and an unreleased EP I bought the T-shirt as I have neither a record player or tape deck. I hope they put the EP on bandcamp at some point. https://scofieldbenefit.merchtable.com/?no_redirect=true Quote
JamesLawrence Posted April 6, 2018 Posted April 6, 2018 I haven't bought anything from the Hydra Head store in years. Maybe 10 or so. Will definitely be getting the shirt Quote
