Being an old git I loved the old Gullwing and the older SLs with the more 'vertical' headlights. Not good on the actual model numbers I'm afraid so I had to Google yours which is perfectly fine to my eyes. It has that bonnet too... The ones I fend less easy to look at are the modern saloon, maybe the last 3 or 4 years. No offence taken, I promise! I'm in full agreement with you....I think they've lost their way....making shapes that could come from anyone.

drTStingray
Limelite would be something like this then - classic late 50s/early 60s family saloon, heavy relic, no pick up covers 😀 Edited April 29, 2018 by drTStingray 2

deepbass5
Hofner I feel is more 2CV And I wouldn't want to play a Limelite in the rain - with vacuum operated wipers But guess most on here haven't driven one of these on the M4 in a thunderstorm

Rest of their output has definitely joined the 'Euroblob' massive, quite non-descript. Even the R172 SLK lost something from it's predecessor. My input would be Rickenbacker - TVR. Stunning when working right, but at the same time iffy build quality, and prone to issues! Japhet
Fender Precision has to equivalent to a Ford F150 Truck. Has sold in colossal numbers and has been in production for decades in countless guises. A real workhorse and all-rounder. Those Ashbury things are like a Smart car. As useless as they are small but people still talk about them. Ricky is like a Harley Davidson. Fantastic to look at but uncomfortable as hell and sounds like it's about to fall to bits. Nah - Fender Precision is the Ford Anglia/Popular of basses. Sold in huge numbers, 50s design no bells and whistles (or working wipers when travelling uphill; or heater etc). But does the job of getting from A to B perfectly well. Surely the Rickenbacker is slightly Art Deco in look - Art Deco styled cars anyone? The F150 and the Precision have been in constant production from the 50s to the present day. No contest.

The Popular/Anglia gave way to the Escort and then Focus - but as with any other car/van/Lorry/bus, none have the very basic accoutrements, or virtually anything else they had in 1957 because apart from as a vintage novelty, driving up the m4 in a rainstorm with vacuum operated wipers for instance, is simply daft. Therein all vehicles and the Precision vary as the latter is still largely the same as in 1957 and you can still buy a new one with the equivalent of the crappy wipers (truss rod adjustment requiring neck removal) - unless you compare them with the original era item it's not valid..... 😏
