bobmartin
I'm thinking about getting back into the D/B, and have noticed that Thomann.de don't stock Gedo's anymore. Is there any opinion on this, and are there any other places to look for a reliable lower priced instrument suitable for commercial amped gigs? SubsonicSimpleton
Thomann still stock DBs made by Hora(11) and Strunal(1), the cheapest besting their own brand anonymous far east offering(the 111) - Gedomusic is a different music instrument company in Germany that also sells the same Strunal and Hora basses as Thomann and their own anonymous far east sourced DBs by mail order. It's reasonably easy to spot the Strunal and Hora offerings on the Gedo site by the neck join and tuners, when I asked them they were reluctant to discuss the origin of any of their instruments. The same numbering convention repeats on the Thomann site for hybrid basses Strunal(2) Hora(22) and full carved Strunal(3) Hora(33) IIRC, if you email them Thomann are happy to confirm the origin of their instruments. If you order the same bass from either company there will be a price differential - Thomann won't add shipping cost on top of their price, but also don't bundle anything with the bass, Gedomusic do bundle some things in. Based on personal experience of playing instruments supplied by both companies, I would take their claims to perform any sort of setup work with a large pinch of salt. bobmartin
I may go for this, https://www.thomann.de/gb/thomann_111e_vn_3_4_double_bass.htm as it has the highest rating at a modest price. I've had a shed load of gear from Thomann over the years, and so feel quite confident about getting a good outcome. Shame about losing the Ebony board though.. I mentioned my plan to a colleague and pulled in a few nice gigs over the summer. Oh Joy! Edited May 2, 2018 by bobmartin
stingrayPete1977
I like my gedo if it's any help, only the cheapest ones are far Eastern, mine is half carved and Romanian, the full carved are made in europe somewhere and their workshop fitted my choice of strings and an adjustable bridge to a professional standard.
NickA
I'm not convinced that a big music department-store is the best place to buy a double bass - mostly they are getting stuff made down to a price by big factories rather than looking for quality. Maybe try a specialist (Bassbags) or a sensible 2nd hand dealer (the DoubleBassRoom). Something like this for instance : https://thedoublebassroom.com/product/1970s-czech-luby-hybrid-3-4/#.Wu-JnH8h1EY. would probably be hard to beat. I think it was this one https://thedoublebassroom.com/product/hungarian-1965-3-4/#.Wu-K-n8h1EZ that came to a recent bass bash and was really rather good.
bobmartin
Thanks for the feedback, I've got one to check one out locally, those examples look very tidy though..
Bilbo
I got my Gedo bass direct from Gedo Musik in Germany. https://www.gedo-musik.de/ Here is something with the bass on from a few months ago. I think the bass cost about £1300. I changed the strings and bridge early on but that's all. Mail order took a few days. Bass solo around 4.50 mark for a more isolated sound. Apologies for the iffy intonation but that is not the bass's fault.

Sold mine and kinda regret it now.
