How to strip off a makeover?

I picked up this bass today at a car boot sale and it looks like it's a 60s Vox Clubman which has been overpainted (yes, by their son in his bedroom, the couple selling it told me).

Any advice as to how can I strip off the paint without taking off the original finish too (the pickguard too)?

I don't know anything about the paint that was used.
