They sound good, but I would like to have a little bit more upper mids or bite to the sound. Would black labels do that? And is there any other good options? Local store has Dimarzio Ultra jazz pickups for reasonable price for example. I have a set of black labels in a passive TT, definitely no lack of bite in them to my ear, but I've never tried Sandbergs Alnico 5s for comparison. Quote
fretmeister Posted January 27 Posted January 27 I took out the black labels from my TT4 and stuck in EMG J set and their preamp. Quote
ozzy138 Posted February 4 Posted February 4 Apology's to the Admins, and please remove if its against the rules. Ive just put up for sale a set of Oliver Reidel Black Label pickups and tone controls over on the Accessories & Other Musically Related Items. I thought this might be the appropriate to flag it... TrevorR Posted February 27 Posted February 27 I’m always loath to share my playing online because I’m hardly the best player in the world but I’ve been getting so many compliments about the sound of my new VM4 since I got it that it’s getting silly. This was at our local jam on Monday when I got up to do a Stevie Nicks/Tom Petty number. This was filmed on someone’s phone and sent to me but the bass sounds so rich and growly it’s unreal. I so love the feel and sound of this bass. This is just the P (or V) pickup solo’d in passive mode, I think, but the tone is great (in my opinion). No effects, just a Tonehammer amp and a couple of MarkBass 1x12s. I love this bass! No wonder none of my other basses are getting any playing time at the moment! 11 Quote
BabyBlueSound Posted March 23 Posted March 23 (edited) I have FINALLY managed to join the club 😁 And I couldn't be happier, what a lovely piece of resonant wood with bits of metal! (Lionel VS BB) Don't want to doublepost so here's the NBD in the shortie topic, and will just attach the pic here: Edited March 23 by BabyBlueSound 2 Quote

In terms of shorties the Ray and Lionel is a combo that’s difficult to beat…..great minds think alike (fools seldom differ?). 6 Quote

You got the proper Ray though, maybe that would have felt better in my hand and would not need to get rid of it... 😁 And I know the problem is with me, I had 2 pro friends try the Sterling and everyone was amazed, even though they don't even like shorties. Maybe it's the thin Jazz neck? I thought I liked those. Yet I always seem to go back to P. So is that a gold finish, or mustard yellow? Hard to tell because of the shine. 1 Quote

I had the Sterling shortie before the full fat version came along (took an age to get one…..). Yes the US one feels better but sound wise I’m hard pushed to tell much of a difference. I do need to change the strings though it’s got D’Addarios on and the gauge is a bit light for me on a shortie. Yep, the Lionel is gold finish….soft core aged, you can only get the gloss finish in soft or hard aged at the minute. It’s alder so it’s lightweight at about 7.5lb. 2 Quote
TrevorR Posted yesterday at 13:21 Posted yesterday at 13:21 There’s a professional photographer who comes along to our jam night occasionally. Rather like this shot he took a few weeks ago of my Sandberg… 3 Quote
Mickeyboro Posted yesterday at 14:01 Posted yesterday at 14:01 Perfect except for the clip on tuner 🤔 1 Quote

I got back into Sandberg's after doing a trade for a VS4 superlight. Playability and comfort spot on for me these days. 1 Quote
