Prince's "When doves cry" with bassline

I think I remember reading somewhere that when Prince recorded "When doves cry" it originally had a bassline but he thought it sounded better without and so it was taken off. I was wondering, in that case, whether there are any versions of the original with the bassline floating around? Similarly, if anyone here covers this song, do you play it with or without a bassline (I would imagine that a "Word up" style bassline would fit in quite nicely)?

I think I read once that there is a copy in the vault! I've covered it before, sure I just played roots with the kick!

Yea roots with the kick would be perfect for that one, or no bass at all, I think that Prince fella knew what he was doing

I listened to this today (not out of choice, I can’t really stand Prince, but it was on the radio), and there’s certainly a synth line underpinning it. 80s I spose.
