Christine
Sat in the van and killing time so time to ask this question: do you have an opinion on carbon reinforced necks? Lifeless, full of life, dark, bright? And anything else they may or not be aside from helping keep the neck more stable. Ive never played one and honestly have no idea but I’ve been considering putting them in my new build but I’d love to hear what you guys who may have used them have to say thanks
Nicko
At the risk of raising the old argument, they sound good on a precision.
bubinga5
Do you mean carbon reinforced necks, or carbon neck's?
fretmeister
Love them. Both reinforced and full graphite like a Status. rigid, stay in tune, fast aggressive attack. wonderful things.
Happy Jack
A full graphite Status neck on a P-bass is a wonderful thing. Tight, punchy, lots of other adjectives too. Can't comment on carbon-reinforced necks, I'm afraid.
NHM
I've got a Spector EuroLX4 (a carbon-reinforced neck), and the sound reminds me of King Wenceslas - deep and crisp and even. What's not to like?
Mykesbass
Very happy with the carbon reinforced neck in my Shuker 5 string P bass. Very stable, no floppy B, and almost comical how well it stays in tune.
kodiakblair
Carbon weave on the G-bass,carbon reinforce with the Cirrus and Millennium basses, think it's 10/90 mix on the Vigier. Fully carbon neck on the B-Quad. Bright/dark,punchy/lifeless ?? I don't think it makes a blind bit of difference soundwise.
lowdowner
Have a Vigier Passion III with carbon reinforcements - great thing is, I can put any gauge strings on and not bother about truss rod adjustments etc. Love mine
stingrayPete1977
My Fender USA Jazz V has two rods either side of the truss rod, all I know is the later versions like mine (2013) have a much better B string than the older ones with five in a row tuners.
bassmachine2112
Hiho just had carbon fibre cages fitted to my neck and all's well now. No not my bass but me and hopefully I'll stay in tune better now. 2

Christine
Sorry for the delay, away the night. I was asking really about reinforcing rods in a wooden neck probably similar to a 4 string Jazz neck. It will be made from African Mahogany, in 5 laminates from quarter sawn timber which is currently resting after ripping down.

BassBod
In a multi laminate neck, the added stiffness of fibre rods is possibly overkill. I remember Wal (chunky laminated necks) decided against it back in the mid 80’s. i’ve got one traditional J neck with carbon rods, and it hardly gives under string tension - with the truss rod undone it remains virtually straight, despite being a very thin profile. Sounds great but it’s not very forgiving, and won’t take a low action without some fret work. Edited May 20, 2018 by BassBod
