Hi all

Reposted here after some advice.

Looking for a special gift for a DB player (also plays electric). Have a decent amount of cash to play with, any ideas most welcome!

I'm not a bassist myself but will try to answer any questions about what he already has if I can!

Thanks

Does he/she have a good DB stand? The Bass Bar stand is highly recommended and is discussed in a recent thread in the EUB and double bass forum on this site, it seems to be ideal for those who play both DB and EB and need to switch easily. There are other stands too.

What about a bow,you can spend little or a lot on these.

A case/gig bag/wheels(bass buggy)?

I'm done.Good luck.

If you want to get him something which

  1. he doesn't already have,
  2. works really well with DB,
  3. will attract loads of attention, and
  4. is just ridiculously cool

then may I suggest http://www.sonuspeaker.com/?page_id=95

I checked these out at NAMM in January and they are just wonderful. They're not perfect for every gigging player since (for example) they can't really be stacked, despite what the makers claim, but this is quibbling.

How about reaching out to one of his favourite bassists to see if you can buy a Skype lesson for him? It’s amazing how many of the best players offer them, especially if you email and explain.

I was bought that timber kit as a present.  When I read the instructions, they seemed to be saying there was a lot of fettling involved with sanding and glueing to get it all to fit together.

Mine is still in the box...

You can buy these already made up on their website

I would definitely go for an occasion rather than an object. A really good tutorial or workshop - if possible with one of his heroes - or tickets to a stand-out gig.

I go twice a year to Aynsley Lister's blues guitar weekends - this link is well out of date:

Usually two or three bass players working with the excellent Steve Amadeo while 20+ guitar players sit and listen to Aynsley. Great atmosphere, high standards, and a lot of fun. Let me know if you want more details.
