Other than that you could look for a used Fender Deluxe Active P Bass Special (yes that's actual name...). I had one briefly and, other than the awful gold plastic faux-anodised pickguard, it was a fine bass that I sold too cheaply... sprocketflup Posted June 12, 2018 Author Share Posted June 12, 2018 My fretless is an Ibanez, (SRF700) and is in my opinion the finest bass I've ever played, so I have history with them. I nipped to Mansons in Exeter yesterday and had an hour or two noodling around on various Ibanezeseses, a few Yamahas, tried a Warwick Streamer, a couple of denominations of Music man stuff and one or two miscellaneous items, none of which seemed to sit right. I think I'm doing what I used to despair of in others - needing a P. (fnerk) Albeit with a J neck. The search continues. Loving the suggestions - many thanks all! itsmedunc Posted June 12, 2018 Share Posted June 12, 2018 Squier JV. Mine weighs in about 8 1/2lb. Not jazz nut width but the neck is shallow and so, makes it easy to play. Has a great sound with stock pups. No need to upgrade anything. Examples do crop up within your price range. The SQ series and E series are great examples too. Nicko Posted June 12, 2018 Share Posted June 12, 2018 A second hand American Special would suit the P bass with J bass neck - its J bass in depth but the width is a bit between the two. Alternatively I also find the Squier Classic Vibe 70s neck a bit less chunky. Neither is particularly light though and both come with P pickup only. German, hand built, construction and materials 2nd to none, bags of tone and an absolute joy to play. Seriously, nothing else I've ever picked up comes close. There's a Basic on BC now for less than £600 which is worth a look, although I was super lucky and picked up my Basic KT (double buck tone monster) for £575 off eBay, but that was a steal tbh.
