Umskii
Good Afternoon all! 😁 2 Quick Question The USA Music Man Stingray 4 pre-amp code is written on the pre-amp PCB as 'MC052W' The question is: Does the USA Musician Stingray 5 pre-amp have the code 'MC053W' stamped on the pre-amp PCB? Do the Sterling Ray 35 and the USA Stingray 5 use the same 'MC053W' PCB with just different capicators? Cheers!
stingrayPete1977
AFAIK the preamps are the same for four and five string, sort of, obviously the pickup is switchable on a five. The cheaper versions have different preamps, the pots are much looser to turn for a start, what actual components are used I don't know. I've got a classic five which has the two band preamp and an Alnico pickup just like a standard 80s Stingray 4.
obbm
From what I remember the pcbs for the SR5 and the Sterling are different sizes with different pot spacings. I once bought a Sterling pre-amp with the intention of putting into an SR5 and it would not fit. The SR5 pre-amp is very different to the SR4. stingrayPete1977
Earlier Ernie balls don't have the green pcb board with the pots attached, I don't think the actual circuit is any different between an SR4 and SR5 3eq, just the spacing that can't be altered if they are on a pcb unlike the ones that are just stuck to the rear of the pots with sticky pads. mikeswals
You are asking if the US Musicman share the same electronics as the Sterling By Musicman model? No. Nothing is shared as far as the parts go, they're not even the same company. SBMM are a different company entirely, making licensed copies of EBMM instruments. There's a thread over at TalkBass dedicated to these basses and the head of SBMM participates there and is quite good at answering questions like these. But essentially what mikeswals said is the truth: the electronics are different.
Umskii
E-mail from ErnieBall Musicman Customer Services 😁 ''Thanks for playing Ernie Ball Music Man! The pickup and preamp are authentic from a StingRay 5 made after 2007. MC053W is the part number of a plain circuit board with nothing on it. You'll find this in many of our bass models, but the preamps are all different as different components get added to the MC053W board to make the models different. Alnico pickups were standard in the StingRay 5 since 2007. Thank you. '' Another ErnieBall Musicman Customer Services Representative confirms this: ''The pickup and preamp in the photos would belong to a StingRay 5 built after 2007. MC053W is the part number of the raw green circuit board with nothing on it and is used in many of our bass models, ofcoarse the preamps are designed differently between the models in terms of what is loaded on to the blank circuit board. '' So yeah, appreciate all the answers on the forums guys! Edited June 15, 2018 by Umskii
