woolf Posted June 9, 2018 Posted June 9, 2018 (edited) You'll be hard pushed to find a nicer example of a Warwick Thumb. Unlike many Thumb basses, I've never had any neck-dive issues with this one, it has a high polish finish which is actually a very dark blue and somewhat translucent, but you'd just assume it was black unless shone under a very bright light. Of all the Warwick's I've owned, this one has the most highly figured wenge fingerboard, I've captured this as best as I can but it looks absolutely superb 'in the flesh'. The condition is pretty good for the age, it has various marks but nothing serious, these are generally difficult to pick out due to the dark finish. You will notice in the pictures that the finish has rippled very slightly over the laminated neck, I understand this is quite typical and in no way effects the integrity of the neck. Weight - 4.4kg It's a fantastic instrument and for me, it has the archetypal Warwick tone and one of the tightest, well-rounded open E's i've heard. No issues with the pickups, pre-amp or truss-rod. Currently set-up with a set of med-light DR Sunbeams. I'm based in Cardiff and would prefer collection but will of course ship in a flight-case (not original). Trial also welcome. See my feedback here on BC. EDIT: I'll consider trades for a nice Jazz bass but would ideally like some cash in my direction. Edited July 9, 2018 by woolf 3
dyerseve Posted June 9, 2018 Posted June 9, 2018 Incredible! Is that a 3 band eq? Played a 90 thumb NT recently and it was an absolute monster tonally. No neck dive issues either and one of the best necks I've played.
Satrugar Posted June 9, 2018 Posted June 9, 2018 Ohhh, I remember that one....this was mine a few years ago! 😮 Fantastic instrument, I can vouch for it. Shall I try and see if I find some old pics? I should have some that show the colour and transparency changing under different lighting conditions. The wood has some nice grain underneath the finish... 🙂

Satrugar Posted June 11, 2018 Posted June 11, 2018 Found some old pics! Make no mistake, it really looks pretty much black unless looked at in the right light and angle. I loved the effect of the finish...
woolf Posted June 12, 2018 Author Posted June 12, 2018 Wow, I've never seen it look so transparent, probably a sign I need to get out more 😀. Thanks for adding those pics 👍

Kev Posted June 28, 2018 Posted June 28, 2018 Gorgeous example and arguably the best year for these basses. Very, very good price too! Re pre, if it is original it would have been custom order. If its MEC, it won't be original as the 3 band eq didn't exist in the eighties I don't believe.
woolf Posted June 28, 2018 Author Posted June 28, 2018 It's certainly 3 band, unless I've misunderstood what this means!? It has controls for bass, mid and treble... along with a volume pot and pickup blend. The pre / pots may not be original but I can't tell, I've taken a picture of the guts in case anyone knows, the stacked pots both are MEC but the middle pot is not. Also, no doubt this is an '89. See pic.

See pic. That's interesting. Looks like it is original. The pre PCB looks like a Warwick, the wiring all looks original so maybe this was a custom order? Mind you the Warwick Corvette standard I have is passive according to the Warwick documents that it came with and the serial number on the Warwick website also shows it as passive but it is most definitely active and all looks original so god only knows what goes on at the Warwick factory on a Friday lol...
Kev Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 My guess this is an MEC 3 band fitted in the nineties at some point. They just didn't exist in the eighties. Its not unusual, iv had an eighties two band fail on me, and my 88 Streamer has a nineties MEC pre fitted too.
woolf Posted July 9, 2018 Author Posted July 9, 2018 Withdrawn for now, played it last night and got cold feet about letting her go 😬.
