yorks5stringer
I'd surmise they perhaps are all miming on this clip: the trumpet sounds very processed.? Apart from a very exaggerated slap style Bassist seems to be on the beat however.
Jean-Luc Pickguard
I'd be worried about dislocating my thumb if I played like that, but if he had done that at least he would have been able to listen to this track in the hospital's elevator. casapete
Great clip! ( I can't slap so have some empathy...…) Also featuring a nearly dodgy note from Mr Alpert around 54s?
Chris2112
I think that'll have been a live performance that was overdubbed with the recorded track, as was common with these old televised studio shows.

Mmm, not sure about that. Not a drum mike to be seen etc. I always thought that Soul Train was a bit like TOTP ( who sometimes used clips of ST when they couldn’t get USA acts into the BBC studios ) - bands would usually mime but feature a live vocal? deepbass5
I think they are all miming. Probably asked Mr Alpert to appear. then thought it was a good idea to use the Village People to mime to his backing track for the session
lowdown
Miming to the original track. 'Soul Train' very rarely had anything live. Also, why would Herb wanna play the same duff note again? 😂 (Louis Johnson playing Bass on the recording)

pineweasel
It's Abe Laboriel on the recording. Louis Johnson is on the Rise LP but not the title track: https://www.mixonline.com/recording/classic-track-rise-herb-alpert-426219 Edited June 18, 2018 by pineweasel
uk_lefty
Looks like me playing slap! And I think I do that with my head when I play too... The amphetamine chicken peck I call it. Edited June 18, 2018 by uk_lefty

I thought I read that LJ was the Bassist, but that was on Wiki, so not to be trusted I suppose. Strange one, as it really does sound like a Stingray Bass as well. It does say Abe Laborial here as well. https://forum.amcorner.com/threads/rise-herb-alpert.14758/ Edited June 19, 2018 by lowdown
KevB
Is he actually a bass player? his body language looks like someone who's been given a bass at short notice and asked to fill in as its all mimed. Guitarist doing the 'how hard can it be' thing maybe ?

Every last one of us. Just me then?
Barking Spiders
Ha ha, no way could you really get a decent slap sound playing like that. All his action is from the elbow if not the shoulder and zero sign of wrist flicking motion.
adamg67
For some reason my faulty brain showed me the title of this topic as: "If you can't, slap mine and look cool". It does things like that.
medpb
I wonder how long you would last in a bass guitar shop before they throw your derrière out for trying all the basses like that lol
Jimothey
I love the pigeon head whilst he slapping some parts it looks like he's slapping with his palm, I can't slap really and I even know that looks very odd and terrible technique I find what is worse than this is when the likes of the x factor gets a 'band' on stage with the s**t singers amazingly they always have one lefty and one righty faking it!! Why not get some actual guitar/bass players to play live?? And not worry about how it looks!?! 🤬 Edited June 24, 2018 by Jimothey
