RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE
I use Toneport in my Mac.,and it is good. What's 'Vista"? Hasta la vista ?
Dood
Read my USB woes here http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=29945 with ref to Vista However.. I reckon the line6 is awesome.. infact on Vista, I would go as far as to say go for the UX2! Very happy with mine!

Danbass7
I use a Ux2. Its awesome, best interface i've used. The model up from it is a waste of money though, its just the same with some garish dials on the front (:

slaphappygarry
Don't bother with the M-Audio stuff. From experience none of it is built to last and their customer service department is shocking and, on top of that, the units don't sound great in comparison to some of the other stuff on the market. dub_junkie
I have the LIne 6 UX2. As well as the guitar/bass side of things there are some wickedly good vocal presets/preamp models imo. I thoroughly recommend it!
zigmondo
I've not had great experience with Creative drivers though their audio converters seem well-specc'ed My experience of M-Audio has been that their cards are reliable. I'm growing out of the inbuilt soft-limiting some M-Audio cards have. For mega-serious stuff I'd not use USB-anything, but for just getting going I'd personally go for the Line 2 or M-Audio of the ones you've referred to. Bay Splayer
mixed reviews on m-audio and e-mu (drivers) and line 6 (gearbox has to be open to use interface) so probably gonna go for one that is vista ready straight from the box would appreciate any opinions on this cheers
escholl
had no issues with the emu 0404 on vista. uses the same drivers as the smaller emu you've got listed above. the 0404 also happens to be the best card you can buy in that price range, IMO. or at least it was by far when i bought mine a year ago. dr.funk
Did you specify the 0404 usb. I think they do a PCI card with the same name that is different, older and possibly not vista compatible. Have a look at the sound on sound review for the 0404 I am pretty sure they said it was ok. I must say with M Audio I have found their build quality to be solid but customer service isn't great and I had a few problems with drivers. ednaplate
I've been looking at the Line 6 UX2 myself and I'm wondering the difference between the red faced UX2 and the black faced one on the Line 6 website.
dub_junkie
cosmetic I'd say. looks swisher in black
BassMunkee
Cakewalk so one - compatible with Vista straight out the box. I have the Firewire version which I would highly recommend. But their USB version is supposedly excellent as well.

Or maybe they're just thick. More likely, I think. Anyways, I've installed the 0404 usb on computers running vista before, and it works perfectly fine. Yes, you have to download the drivers, but that really should be done anyways as (at least with my card) the downloaded version had some bugfixes and a firmware update as well. AFAIK, the drivers for the 0404, the 0202, and the other one (sorry forget the name) all come in one install file, so I can't imagine why any of the others wouldn't work. ednaplate
Regarding the difference between the red faced and black faced UX2 the red faced says Tone Port on the top and UX2 on the black faced version. I'm not too sure of the difference. Neither is a firewire which I thought would be what you would need to overcome latency problems.

Dood
and line 6 (gearbox has to be open to use interface)
You use Gearbox or Podfarm in the same way as you would use the controls on a POD. It's just a graphical aplet for accessing the massive library of amps / preamps / cabs - and bypass modes. Both peices of software are free with the UX2 and are not detrimental to the interfaces operation.
Lysdexia
Talking to my mate who has the red face version and I have the black one, we both got different software.. (I think I got extra free maybe, where as he would have to pay for a download).
The major difference is that 1. Red UX2 comes with Gearbox, which must be used to record with and imprints the tone you selected on input. The only way to change your mind is to re-record. 2. Black UX2 comes with PodFarm, which operates as a standard VST plugin (or RTAS/AU)and so you can record a 'dry' signal (but still hearing the selected tone). This means you can route the dry recorded signal back through the plugin and change the tone as many times as you wish. The options on Gearbox and Podfarm are similar, but the recording versatility offered with the newer, black version are crucially important I'd say if given the choice. Also, don't be mislead by the likes of DV247 offering a money saving option by paying less for the Red UX2, but with the added benefit of a free download of PodFarm. The free download is for a standalone version and NOT the plugin.
