CalDeep
Hey guys! Need a new P pickup for a 75 P, the original one is just not cutting it any more. I'd narrowed it down to the Nordstrand NP4 but then a Bareknuckle 65' has turned up on BC and got me thinking. I cant find a lot about the Bareknuckle online so just wanted to see who's had either and what you think! Cal
miles'tone
I have a Bare Knuckle '65 and it's brilliant. Not tried a Nordy but the BN is up there with the Fralin I once had.
Chiliwailer
My NP4 was too polite for my tastes. The BK will be more traditional, I had a 58 which was just that.
Mykesbass
I love the Nordy in my Shuker. Full, warm, rounded. Not aggressive but then one person's "not aggressive" is another's "too polite"! Sorry, can't compare with the BK, but a lot less gnarly than the Kent Armstrong in my bitsa. Edited June 26, 2018 by Mykesbass

I found this with the NP4, very polite would be my description. Good sound, just not aggressive enough.
xroads
Just a thought: can you get the original PU re-magnetized?
ead
I have an NP4 in a Sandberg VS and I'm a fan. I find it sounds very similar to my MIJ E series P; alas I have no experience of the BK as a counterpoint unfortunately.
Sparky Mark
Bareknuckle may be able to rewind your original to your taste.

There is a limit to how much "charge" an Alnico magnet can take - or any magnet in fact. See magnetic hysteresis.
fretmeister
Never liked Bareknuckle. Impressed with the Nordy's I've had. LOVED the Aguilar 60s wind P I've got. It's thick and throaty and reacts so well to playing strength.
only4
I know it’s neither of the pickups you mentioned but The Creamery do a classic 74 P bass pickup which could be closest to your original? https://www.creamery-pickups.co.uk/custom-handwound-pickups-from-the-creamery/scatterwound-bass-pickups.html#P-BASSSOLO14
rubis
I have a Bare Knuckle p bass pickup, its awesome I have a Nordstrand MM and a 5 string p pickup, they’re all great Both companies make fantastic pickups, you won’t regret either and there are plenty of clips around to help you decide which one is closest to the sound in your head
therealting
My 61 has the Bareknuckle 65, my 64 has the NP4. The NP4 is smoother, I like it for that old-school vibe. As everyone else has said, the Bareknuckle has more bite.
