The first pre-amp circuits made by MM were dipped in epoxy resin. It made them impervious to moisture and nosey engineers from Fender trying to work out what was inside. It was a common thing in those days to epoxy coat circuits for military purposes - it gave an air of mystery as to what was inside. It wasn't anything special, just a bit of Leo showmanship I suspect. It didn't last long and stopped in early 1979-ish. I have a 77 and a 79. the 77 is epoxy coated the 79 not.

Indeed. Some say these early epoxy preamps sound much nicer than the later non-epoxy preamps. Fact is these are more rare and much more sought after.

I also own a pre-EB StingRay in the walnut finish with a black epoxy preamp and a fretted rosewood board. Mine has a '78 body and an '80 neck. Given that Music Man discontinued the black epoxy preamps in late '78 / early '79 and didn't introduce rosewood fretted boards as an option until late '79, I presume there aren't too may examples around with this combination of specs. Either way, this bass is an absolute steal at this price!
