bubinga5
Looking put some new tuners on the bass. But I'm not sure if Hipshot Ultra light would be a direct ( measurement wize) replacement. I'm not even sure if these are Hipshot on the bass. It's quite an old Sei so what Martin put on it I'm not sure. I've had the strings off and they do wobble a little. Bushes wearing.? Who knows. Anyways I'm aware they do a lollypop design and the clover design. Not sure which one would suit. ? In fact I know nothing about reverse/ratio tuners etc etc. Any info would be great. What do you guys recommended.? Cheers.
wateroftyne
Hmm.. they look like Ultralites, but as far as I'm aware, they've always had the logo embossed on the housing.. even the licensed version...? Unless they didn't back in the day?
bubinga5
Im not sure too be honest WOT, I can't imagine Martin fitting crap tuners, but who knows, there gonna go. The Sei is gonna be spoilt with a new set. 😀.. This is why I'm confused. From Bass Direct. I know I want chrome but what are the size measurements revering to. I guess its the the stem length.? http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Hipshot,_Ultra_light_Tuners.html Edited July 4, 2018 by bubinga5

wateroftyne
FWIW, here's my oval USA UL's..
Hellzero
USA Hipshot Ultralite have not always been branded. I had a set of mixed branded on the bass side and unbranded on the treble side on a very old fiver Wood & Tronics...
P-ZARN
I've got a Valenti Jazz bass with unbranded genuine Hipshot ultralights
Hellzero
That said, if you have no tuning stability problem, don't change them as these Hipshot Ultralite's are not really cheap.
yorks5stringer
RE the wobble, I have some stock tuners on a Japanese P Bass and one of them (when the string tension is off) is really wobbly but under tension is absolutely fine.
franzbassist
If they are wobbly you should be able to increase the tension on the tuner with an allen key via the bolt on the bottom of each tuner.

BigRedX
I have Ultralites on my Black Gus bass and they are also unbranded and look exactly like the ones in your photograph (other than they are black).

Walbassist, I've tried that but after time tuners (I think) wear, and the tolerances when they were made decrease. There is a thing with (some) tuner's, that when you tune up a string, you have to wind down, then wind up to tune properly, ( because of the gap/slip in the cog mechanism . Ive been told by a good source that USA Ultralites have so little give in the mech that you can wind down and tune perfectly. This is not cow poop I googled it. 😁 But without joke they have had there day, and the bass deserves them, and I have some spare cash. The thing is what would suit it better.? LollyPops or Clover Leafs.?

LollyPops or Clover Leafs.? Unfortunately that's bollocks. The reason you tune down and then back up is because the windings on the string catch at various points along their travel - at the nut, over the bridge saddles, as they pass under string retainers... Tuning down lets the windings drop past any "obstructions" and then you tune back up to pitch. It's got nothing to to do with how good the machine head mechanism is. Hipshot machine heads might be better made than the competition, but they still won't help when your string is caught on the nut or string retainer.

Applies to all string instruments too. Always tune up to tension. Never down.
chris_b
Hipshot make tuners with different sized barrels, 1/2" and 3/8". Do you know which size you need? Then again, why do you need to change the tuners at all?
discreet
Lollipop tuners are great, but not on a fiver. It's a four-string thing.
miles'tone
Save your money, you have Ultralites. Just tighten them up.

But again I've been educated by the mighty BRX.

I need a lie down before contemplating tuners any more
