Hey guys! I found this Fender Precision Bass being sold online for a crazy bargain. I'm worried this might be too good to be true, so I'm a bit skeptical about buying it. Also the hole for the truss rod seems to be a bit off, like it's not completely in the middle of the neck.
Would you guys have any idea if this pbass is a legit Fender or just a copy? I only just messaged the seller asking for more pictures, like a clearer picture of the headstock, the back of the body and the neck, and a serial number. I'll upload the other pics once the seller answers my message and provides the pictures I asked for so it can be a bit easier to come up with an answer for sure.

Thanks for the help!

That looks very wrong to me. Truss rod adjustment hole looks wrong, headstock decal looks out of place, the pickguard doesn’t look the right shape, sunburst looks wrong, and there aren’t many stock Fender basses with PJ pickups in that colour with maple necks. Just lots of small things that make me say avoid or at least don’t pay much and happily know you have probably not got a Fender.

Looks like a cheap bitsa to me. Probably a Squier Affinity body with a cheap neck and Fender decal put on.

Not a Fender expert in any shape or form, but I don't believe in 'free lunches'.

That burst is ringing bells, I’ve seen it somewhere before on a low rent clone but I’m struggling to recall what it was. I

Might be a lovely bass to play but def not a fender

Not enough screws on the pick guard. Two extra screws on the corners of the bridge. The contouring and horn shape doesn’t look quite right. It’s a no from me.

Thanks for the replies! I'm not that great at spotting the fakes from the real ones yet, so thanks for all the input! I had a feeling there was something off about how it looked, I just couldn't say for sure, but good to know I can trust my instincts a little bit when it comes to looking at possible fakes haha sucks though I was hoping I'd get a steal, and I liked the two tone sunburst design on it. I'd give it a test run if only it had strings on it.

Thanks for all the help!

Here’s another that may be questionable, what do bcers think. Claims to be ‘78 with an added active J pickup. Obviously the P pup is different too.

I recommend you buy https://www.amazon.co.uk/Fender-Bass-Illustrated-History/dp/0634026402/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1531212220&sr=1-2&keywords=the+fender+bass+book

there are pictures of them of every era and they also talk about what changed, things fender tried (like the lollipop tuners) and so on.

I wonder the author of the “History” hasn’t published an updated version. They has been quite a bit of innovation in the last 17 years - Jaguar bass, Dimension, Rascal to mention just a few. Time someone wrote a new one.
