Help me find some replacement pups for my P bass

Hi all

I'm considering replacing the pups in my MIA P bass with something a little 'fatter'.... There seems to be a fair bit of choice, including the Wizard ones reviewed in the reviews section.

I'm looking for a kind of vintage sound (think Duck-like!), lots of bottom (oo-er), and not too bright. Oh, and I'm also completely useless with a soldering iron, so would appreciate a recommendation of where to get 'em fitted too, in the Leamington / Banbury / Warwick area!

Cheers all

Mark.

I've heard these are quite good - Kent Armstrong Hot Vintage

and these too Delano Hot Vintage

As for a guitar tech, try Pete Allen 01926 499012 www.guitartechnicalservices.co.uk he's in Warwick

WoT - thanks for the recommendation for the Wizards.... been checking out their website. I shall probably give them a try.

Hamster - thanks for Pete's number - I've been looking for someone local to do a proper setup for me, so I'll get in touch with him when I get the new pups and get it all done at the same time.

Cheers

Am I too late to recommend a SD Basslines Quarterpounder? When the original failed on my 79, I thought active EMGs would be the best option, so ran it on a 19v circuit. Awful. Pulled that out and put a passive Quarterpounder in. I get everything from a great full-on Rickenbackeresque clank to lovely dubby 60s sound.

You can pick these up for about £40 shipped from the USA on eBay.

I've read some good reviews of the Quarterpounders today. Handily, tomorrow I'm off to the US for a week with work, so I may see if there's a Guitar World in the area I'm staying in.

Thanks for all the recommendations so far.

Not sure about fat sounding but you could try the seymour duncan spb-1 vintage for p bass

http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/bass...tageforPBassreg
, it is based on the 1957 precision bass pick up so is definately vintage sounding

Alternative to the Wizards - Bare Knuckle Pickups. He'll do a P bass pickup for you. His website doesn't have anything about bass pickups on it but just email or ring him with your requirements.

I'd go hand-wound custom made in the UK, either BKP or Wizard. It's not that I'm overly patriotic or anything - it's just cheaper and you'll get exactly what you're after.

Have you checked out the Darkstars?.
A little different way to go but the sound of them on a P is great

Cheers,

I tried a fair few pickups including SD 'Hot', Q.P., Dimarzio, Kent Armstrong & EMG on my Tokai. Eventually settling on SPB-1, which is probably closest sounding to it's original stock P/U, but with more clarity. To my ears, it has a nice warm vintage tone.
However, will probably give Wizard a go, when/if I get round to changing my Maya P-Bass.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. I'm over in the US this week on business, and just got back from the local Guitar Center. Managed to pick up some SD Quarterpounders for the equivalent of 30 quid, so I went with those. I figured at that price, if I wasn't happy with them, I'd get my money back on them in the UK, and would look at some custom wounds.

Incidentally, some right old Billy Bargains to be had over here. Have a look at this thread for a few things that caught my eye tonight: -
