I don't like it, I love it as a whole. Those handpans aka hang drums are a wonderful invention, and using a jew's harp this way is also wonderful as the bansuri and the fretless.

Thanks Tony.

I knew you like this !

It's Blue Murder for me,by the band of the same name. Tony Franklin on fretless, Carmine Appice with the best drum sound ever committed to tape, and local lad John Sykes doing everything else

Some great choices with which I agree, esp Jaco on Shadows and Light.  No one has mentioned anything by China Crisis from the 80s and didn’t Bruce Thomas play some great fretless in the Attractions somewhere?

Great post.

For me "Masques" by Brand X is tops. Percy Jones playing is hugely expansive, influential and undoubtedly had a meaningful affect upon Mick Karns development.

... I wouldn't disagree with any of the other opinions offered thus far. Jaco was obviously a monster on "Heavy Weather" by Weather Report.

I'm a big fan of WRs Heavy Weather but for me Percy Jones with Brand X top the fretless bill (I've got the 4 CD set Nuclear Burn so can't decipher which album is best!).

Tin drum as far as albums but the 80s was great for fretless

The Dreaming by Kate bush is full of fretless wonders too

Paul young, peter gabriel, blue nile ,black,Numan, china crisis etc etc all had great stuff to try and learn

Karn is the boy for me

And we forgot the great Carles Benavent with Paco de Lucia (everything was played fretless !!!) He even played with Miles Davis and nowadays, he's been playing with Chick Corea...

Listen to this and his amazing style of playing :

Yeah, he is great. I have seen him live a few times over in Spain.

There is an interesting version of 'Bluestorius' on YouTube somewhere (although on fretted).
